Sydney's Metropolitan Goods Lines

The Metropolitan Goods Lines, which spread throughout the Sydney suburbs from 1916 onwards, have played a key role in the industrialization of the city and the development of many suburbs. While some of these lines have become disused, others have been repurposed as light rail for the contemporary city.

Sydney's monorail

Sydney's monorail was opposed from the moment its construction was announced. Derided as an eyesore and an ineffective solution for Sydney's growing transport needs, the passing of the monorail attracted over 1500 passengers for its final journey in July 2013. We explore the history of the monorail Sydney-siders loved to hate.

Atlas Engineering Company

Engineering company at Pyrmont which built ships and railway rolling stock from 1878.

Chief Commissioner of Railways and Tramways

State government authority set up to manage and run the railways, tramways, and buses. This authority began the process of electrifying the railway and tram lines in Sydney. In 1930 responsibility for trams and buses was shifted to a Road Transport Commissioner.

Colonial government authority set up to build and administer New South Wales railways.

Commissioners of Sydney and Hunter River Railways

Colonial government authority set up to build railways for New South Wales after private companies failed to raise the necessary capital. The Commissioners oversaw the completion of the first line from Sydney to Parramatta.

New South Wales Railway Commissioners

Colonial and later state government body established to run New South Wales's existing railway and tram lines. From 1905 government buses also came under the control of this organisation.

Single loop, elevated monorail connecting Darling Harbour and Sydney's central business district. Always a controversial structure it was finally demolished to allow expansion of the entertainment precinct at Darling Harbour.

Sydney Metro

Automated rapid transit network planned to supplement the existing public railway network. Initially proposed to the New South Wales government in 2001.
