Bodegas

Founded by the Spanish and Portuguese residents of Darlinghurst in the late nineteenth century, bodegas operated as wine bars throughout the twentieth century, coming into their own as postwar migrants looked for food and wine from home.

Coffee

Coffee grew in the garden at the first Government House but Sydney remained predominantly a tea-drinking colony. Despite the efforts of temperance campaigners to replace alcohol with coffee, coffee drinking remained a minority pleasure until after World War II, when coffee-loving migrants arrived in great numbers.

Rowe Street

A narrow laneway, running between Pitt and Castlereagh streets, Rowe Street was small-scale, personable, cosmopolitan, and fun.

Bellevue

Colonial mansion on Glebe Point of late Victorian Italianate design. It was only used as a home until 1925 when a timber mill was operated from and around the site. When Blackwattle Bay Park was created by landfill in the 1970s only the house was retained due to community lobbying and currently operates as a cafe and community centre.

Georgian style warehouse buildings built to service the commerce and international shipping transport hub of Sydney until the late nineteenth century. Now occupied by restaurants.

Carousel Club

Nightclub in Kings Cross on the corner of Darlinghurst Road and Roslyn Street that was owned by Abe Saffron & Sammy Lee who had built the venue to house the revue 'Les Girls'.

Coogee Aquarium and Swimming Baths

Pleasure gardens, baths and aquarium constructed at the northern end of Coogee Beach. The original 'Coogee Palace' covered the whole block bound by Dolphin, Beach, Bream and Arden streets. A promenade was constructed in 1889 could accommodate 3,000 people. From the 1920s, parts of the site were leased to shopkeepers and residents. In 1935, the aquarium displayed the shark at the centre of the shark arm murder case. A conservation order was placed in 1982 and in 1984 the building's huge dome collapsed. In 1987 the building was restored and reopened as The Beach Palace Hotel. In 2014 the building was purchased by the Merivale group and reopened as the Coogee Pavilion, a restaurant and bar complex.

Dunbar House

House built at Robertson Bay by Richard Siddon which was used as a hotel and Town Hall and is today used for weddings and private events.

Green Park bandstand

Bandstand erected in Green Park, Darlinghurst, to host public concerts, popular during the interwar years, and later converted to a cafe.

Harry's Cafe de Wheels

Pie cart which has become an iconic tourist attraction and late night food stop for generations of Sydneysiders and visiting sailors. Now in a fixed location at Woolloomooloo it was started by Harry Edwards and has been visited by many celebrities some of whom are remembered in the murals on the cart.

Howes Refreshment Rooms

Refreshment rooms and 72 huts which were established at Yarra Bay by George Howes and William Rose at the picnic venue for visitors and social club outings. The huts were built as accommodation for campers and fishermen and during the Depression years became the homes of many unemployed. All were demolished in the 1960s.

Kinselas

Former drapers which was converted to a funeral chapel by architect C Bruce Dellit. The foyer contains a sculpture by Raymond Hoff and the whole was considered one of the finest Art Deco style funerary spaces in Sydney. The building is now used as a bar and function rooms.

Leura Coffee Palace

Grand guesthouse on Leura Mall which was built in 1892 for travellers arriving at the newly built train platform. In 1968 it was converted to a nursing home.

Malabar Tea Rooms

Popular tea rooms, bakery and cakeshop at Bay Parade which was later used as a wedding reception venue. It was established about 1910 by Thomas Henry Tollis and operated as a family business until the 1970s.

Music Hall Theatre Restaurant

Theatre-restaurant in Neutral Bay Junction. In its heyday it had stalls and a gallery which could seat 500 people at tables. It initially operated as a cinema and then for a short time in the late 1950s as a skating rink, before it opened as a music hall and restaurant.

Pitt Street Temperance Hall

Hall constructed by the New South Wales Alliance for the Suppression of Intemperance which by 1884 had had 37000 people sign the pledge. The growth of the Alliance necessitated the enlargement of the hall by builder Charles Gerth in 1884.

Stones Milk Bar site

Popular bar and coffee lounge in Coogee. Established by William 'Pop' Stones and wife Bridget, it became famous all over Sydney. Patrons sat at marble tables and ordered milkshakes or their renowned fruit cocktails with penny ice cream. Amateur performers provided entertainment and concerts were conducted on Sunday evenings. During World War II, the bar was a popular haunt among American servicement and Prince Philip also reputedly visited it as a young naval officer. The bar was sold after Mrs Stones' death but remained within the Stones' family, becoming a Teen Cabaret until it was sold in 1967 and converted into a Hungarian restaurant. Afterward it became the Coogee Comedy Theatre Restaurant.

Sydney Tower

Sydney's tallest free standing structure, the observation tower is 309 metres tall sitting atop an office and retailing centre. It also contains three levels of dining and function centre and a glass viewing platform. The speed of the double deck lifts are determined by wind conditions around the tower.

The Abbey

Originally built as a Presbyterian church on the corner of Parramatta and Glebe Point roads in the 1870s, it was moved stone by stone to 158 Bridge Road in 1927. It is now used as a restaurant and function centre.

Bar Coluzzi

Cafe originally established in William Street, Darlinghurst by Italian-born boxer Luigi Coluzzi and his Romanian wife Eleni in 1957 before relocating to Victoria Street in 1970. It introduced Sydneysiders to espresso coffee and remains a popular institution. Other cafes in the chain are at Randwick, the city and the airport.

Milk bar in Kings Cross which initially sold non-alcoholic beverages including milkshakes before it became a gathering place for young people from the 1940s featuring seating, snack food and two juke boxes. From the late 1940s it played progressive jazz music, a genre which, according to one frequent patron, Martin Vaughan, was played no where else in Sydney.

Victoria Coffee Palace

Temperance hotel and restaurant opened on 23 July 1889 at 208 Pitt Street, which included shops, dining rooms, drawing, reading and smoking rooms and bedrooms. In 1918 it was sold for £25,000 and subsequently remodelled as a restaurant.

Wine cellar opened by the winemaker and viticulturist, Leo Buring, in the basement of the former Primrose Building at 255A George Street in August 1931. The premises were described as having 'the head of Bacchus...to guide guests in and out' with 'shaded lights' and a feeling of 'cloistered gloom'. According to a publication produced by Buring, titled 'Amusings of the Ye Olde Crusty', it notes:

In an earlier and out-of-print edition of the "A-Musings,” Ye Olde Crusty was described as a Wine Cellar...It is more than such words could convey. It is the treasure house of the Grape, presided over by the Master Vigneron, Mr. Leo Buring.

The cellar's special vintages attracted crowds and the venue also played host to many distinguished guests. In May 1933, officers of the German Navy light cruiser DKM Köln visited the cellar.

Pioneer of American cafe culture in Sydney with his chain of milk bars.

Blyth, William

Confectionery and pastry cook who was the proprietor of popular refreshment rooms in Pitt Street between 1843 and 1850. Born in England around 1805, he arrived in Sydney in 1833 with confectioner Thomas Dunsdon and his family, and managed their business opposite the Bank of Australia on lower George Street. Blyth married Dunsdon's sister Hephzibah in 1839 and took over the business in his own right in 1840. In 1843 he opened the new store on Pitt Street next to the Victoria Theatre. He sold the business in 1850 and established an Italian grocery at Haymarket. They moved to Victoria after this, where Hepzibah died in 1880. Blyth returned to Sydney and was living with his son Alfred in Marrickville at the time of his death in 1895.

Renault, Jeanne

French restaurateur who established The Hermitage (L'Hermitage) restaurant in the former Paling's building in Ash Street with her husband, Henry. Jeanne later opened another restaurant of the same name on West Esplanade, Manly.

Jeanne and Henry were instrumental in establishing the Wine and Food Society of NSW. Members of the society asked the Renaults to set up a ‘base’ for their society, so their restaurant became the society's home. While Jeanne worked 'front of house' at The Hermitage, Henry was their chef until he established Renault and Company, a wine importing business, in 1947.

Once lined by exclusive mansions from the 1830s, the road has seen a transformation from the Bohemian atmosphere of the 1930s and 40s where the cafes and nightclubs attracted writers and artists, to the seedier side of bars and strip clubs which proliferated during wartime to entertain servicemen from nearby Garden Island. Today it is a red light district, tourist mecca and home to the desperate and the affluent.

Dixon Street

The centre of Sydney's Chinese community, the street is marked by ceremonial gates, banners and signage for the many restaurants and businesses in the area. It was once home to many of the old clan associations who were actively involved in the welfare of the Chinese who came to try their luck in the goldfields.
