Legislation to allow the resumption and cleansing of wharves and residential areas which was seen as a necessary response to prevent the spread of the 'Bubonic Plague'.

The Glebe Lands (Apppropriation) Act 1974

Federal legislation championed by Tom Uren, Minister for Urban and Rural Development and passed by the Whitlam government, to enable the purchase and transfer of housing from church to state. It thereby allowed the preservation of the townscape and the opportunity for low income earners and families to stay close to the city.
