Aboriginal Legal Service

The foundation of the Aboriginal Legal Service in 1970 marked the beginning of a new and radical period in Aboriginal politics. It was the first Aboriginal organisation that directly challenged government institutions by offering alternate services.

Aborigines Progressive Association

The Aborigines Progressive Association had a leading role in organising the Day of Mourning on Australia Day 1938, and worked for full citizenship rights for Aboriginal people until the mid-1940s.

Australian Aborigines Progressive Association

Influenced by black political struggles in the United States, the Australian Aborigines Progressive Association demanded the dissolution of the Aborigines Protection Board, return of Aboriginal land, and an end to removal of Aboriginal children.

Day of Mourning 1938

Attended by Aboriginal activists from all over Australia, the Day of Mourning was the first national Aboriginal civil rights gathering.

Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983

Legislation which provided land rights for Aboriginal persons and provides representative Land Councils which may acquire and manage lands and other assets.

Women's Legal Status Act 1918

Legislation to provide that women should not be discriminated against by reason of sex from holding certain positions or to practising certain professions.

Black Moratorium

Political mobilization which culminated in a march on July 14 1972 from Redfern to Sydney demanding Aboriginal land rights and civil rights. It was attended by over 6000 Aborigines, labour workers and students.

Freedom Ride

Protest trip in 1965 through country New South Wales which highlighted the segregation and lack of civil rights of Indigenous Australians. Students from the University of Sydney formed a group called the Student Action for Aboriginals and conducted the trip to also draw public attention to the poor state of Aboriginal health, education and housing.

Long March for Justice, Freedom and Hope

March of Indigenous people and their supporters to celebrate 200 years of survival under colonisation. It arrived in Sydney on Australia Day 1988 as a counterpoint to the country's Bicentennial celebrations.
