Observer Hotel

Federation Free Style hotel with Art Nouveay stylings that stands on the corner of George Street North and Mill Lane in the Rocks. It opened in 1909 on the site of earlier hotels Observer Tavern and the Waterman's Arms as part of the renewal of the area after the resumption of many of the properties in the area after the outbreak of plague in 1901.

Great fire in the city, October 1890

Disastrous fire that broke out at the printers Gibbs, Shallard & Co's premises in Hosking Place on the northern side of Moore Street on the morning of 2 October 1890. The surrounding city block, almost an hectare, was also destroyed, including a large number of warehouses and office buildings. With the destruction of so many buildings, the opportunity was taken to widen Moore Street, the first step to creating Martin Place.

Statutory authority set up to manage and redevelop The Rocks area, and given most of the state-owned property in the area. Its plans for redevelopment were successfully resisted by heritage enthusiasts and the Builders Labourers Federation Green Bans. Much of its work was taken over by the new Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority in 1999.

Waterway to the west of the city once surrounded by wharves, goods yards, woolstores and factories which contributed enormously to the city's economic wealth. The former rail lines and goods yards were transformed from commercial port to a recreational and pedestrian precinct in the 1980s.

Green Square

Redevelopment area which includes Beaconsfield, Zetland and parts of Rosebery, Alexandria and Waterloo. Previously industrial precincts are to be transformed into an urban residential environment.
