Balmain Power Station

Originally supplying the inner-west with electricity, this icon of Balmain's industrial heritage ultimately gave way to demand for waterfront property.

White Bay power station

In operation from 1917 to 1984, the White Bay Power Station helped to power Sydney for most of the twentieth century. The site is now the last remaining example of a coal-dependent, harbourside, industrial complex, once common in Sydney.

Challenge Woollen Mills

Paper mill on the Georges River which was converted to woolen mills. Part of the building has been retained in the current residential development.

Glebe Incinerator

Smallest incinerator of 13 designed by Griffin in Australia to destroy garbage which had previously been towed and dumped at sea, often causing pollution which washed back to shore. It operated for over twenty years and has since been restored as a meeting room and interpretative centre.

Globe Mills

Four storey mill which conducted all processes from wool scouring to garment construction before closing after World War II. Recently converted to apartments.

Pyrmont Incinerator

A modern cubist-inspired building with richly decorative detailed work based on Aztec motifs, the incinerator was constructed on a steep quarried site that took 20 years to redevelop after it was decommissioned in 1971. The site is now occupied by apartments.

Ultimo power station

The Ultimo Power House on the corner of Harris and William Henry Streets was built in 1898 'in the Italian Renaissance style of architecture' to supply Sydney's new electric tram system, and opened in 1899, producing choking clouds of coal dust over Ultimo. After the trams stopped in 1961, the building became redundant. In 1988 it was modified to house the Technological Museum and reopened as the Powerhouse Museum.

West Pymble Incinerator

Garbage incinerator opened in 1930 and closed due to public opposition in 1954.

Westinghouse factory site

Purpose built factory at 135-151 Dunning Avenue Rosebery which has housed major engineering works and household appliance manufacturing. It was also used as a government annex during the war for munitions manufacturing.

Willoughby Incinerator

Four level incinerator which achieved much higher efficiencies by moving the refuse down a sloping vibrating grate within the combustion chamber. The building has since been converted to office and studio space.

ACI Glassworks

Glass manufacturing works that at its peak in the late 1960s had 33 buildings on a large site later redeveloped for dense housing.

Albion Brewery

Brewery constructed at the corner of Albion and Elizabeth streets Surry Hills for Samuel Terry. It was to become part of Toohey's Brewery before being demolished for office blocks.

Bunnerong Power Station

Coal powered electric power stations in Matraville. Once able to supply a third of the state's electricity, it was closed after concerns with ash pollution and the construction of Lake Macquarie power stations.

Government lumber yard

Official government lumber yard and workshop on the southern corner of Bridge and George Streets that employed convict labour. Established about 1789 after an earlier yard on Bennelong Point was destroyed by fire, the yard was enlarged and improved by successive governments. In 1832 when the yard closed and the works moved to a smaller site next to Hyde Park Barracks it was providing employment for about 183 convicts. The lumber yard was an important early centre of manufacturing - well as blacksmiths, sawyers and carpenters it employed wheelwrights, tin smiths, tool makers, brass and iron founders, coopers, gunsmiths and wheelwrights. Clothes and shoes were also produced there.

Millers Point gasworks

The city's first gasworks, established by the Australian Gas Light Company in 1841, on the Darling Harbour edge of Millers Point, where Barangaroo is now. Production was gradually transferred to the company's Haymarket site and the Mortlake. The works were sold to the state government in 1912 and the buildings demolished by 1922. Some traces of the site still remain.

Mount Kuring-gai Industrial Estate

Industrial estate first established in 1967 on Beaumont Road west of the Pacific Highway.

Pyrmont Power Station

Steam driven station which powered Sydney's first electric street lights. By the 1970s it became an emergency generator as new power stations were bought into use. The original façade is preserved on Pyrmont Street.

Heritage listed former coal-fired power station at White Bay, Rozelle, which operated from 1917 to 1983.

Concrete grain silos which operated from 1921.

John Booth's Steam Saw Mills

Steam driven saw mill on the Balmain shoreline east of Booth Street which was destroyed in a dramatic fire in 1874 and then rebuilt. The mill had machinery to produce up to 200,000 feet of timber per week which was used for shipbuilding and general joinery.
