St Bernard's Catholic church Botany

Catholic church on Ramsgate Street at Botany, built in 1954 to replace the earlier St Bernard's church building on Botany Road. The distinctive modern parabolic building was designed by architect Kevin Curtin.

Buhrich, Eva

Arriving in Sydney in 1939, Eva Buhrich worked in architectural design until the poor pay rates for women architects drove her to writing. She became a well-known commentator on architecture and design, writing for magazines, industry journals and the Sydney Morning Herald.

Built environment

Built over tracks, campsites, rock art and middens used for thousands of years before the dispossession of the Aboriginal people, Sydney's early haphazard development was given form by public buildings. As public transport developed, suburbs spread, and throughout the twentieth century, town planners struggled with developers to direct the form and extent of the city. After World War II, city buildings got taller, outer suburbs sprang up ever further away, and issues of heritage and architecture were contested. In the twenty-first century, concerns about environment, urban density, public transport and renewed infrastructure are driving change.

Butler Stairs

Stairways such as Butler Stairs were part of the Sydney City Council’s Victorian infrastructure boom, and the sophisticated level to which these stairways are detailed shows a level of civic pride and financial investment in pedestrian infrastructure that had not been undertaken previously in the city.

Christian church architecture

Church architecture in Sydney has at times been the most significant and exceptional in the architecture of Sydney. At other times, church denominations have settled on continuing a successful type, seeking to make a noticeable character across the region. As immigrants imported their traditions, they adapted to the materials and surroundings of the new country.

Cookney, George

George Cookney came to Sydney in 1823 with good connections and prospects, but his career ended in disgrace and transportation to Tasmania, where he redeemed himself somewhat.

Cullis-Hill, Eleanor

An early woman architect in Sydney, Eleanor Cullis-Hill worked for the Housing Commission before setting up her office at home, because she felt women were not really welcome in architectural offices.

Dental Hospital of Sydney

The striking Dental Hospital of Sydney, designed by Stephenson & Turner and built in 1939 on a wedge-shaped block next to Central Station, is a modernist building that is internationally acclaimed for its world-class design and oral hygiene services.

Edmunds, Rosette

An early graduate in architecture, Rosette Edmunds became lead designer for Clement Glancey, and was involved in designing many Catholic churches and schools in Sydney. She wrote and illustrated a history of world architecture, before moving into town planning.

Fowles, Joseph

Farmer, businessman, racing enthusiast, Joseph Fowles was also a successful artist, who left a visual record of Sydney in 1848 that remains invaluable to historians.

Griffin, Marion Mahony

The first woman in the United States to qualify as an architect, Marion Mahoney Griffin's legacy in Australia can be seen in the work done in Castlecrag, Canberra and Melbourne with her husband Walter Burley Griffin.

Nosworthy, Ellice

A graduate of the first academic architecture course, Ellice Nosworthy made it a practice to employ other women architects in her practice, which specialised in domestic buildings.

Reserve Bank of Australia Building, 65 Martin Place, Sydney

The Reserve Bank building on Martin Place was designed in 1959 to establish a distinct public profile for the new institution in order to ensure its public recognition and confidence. Its position at the junction of Martin Place and Macquarie Street complements its identity as an organisation that is central to the functioning of the Australian economy, but also an institution that represents the interests of the Australian people and remains accountable to them.

The Harbour End

When The Wharf opened its doors in January 1985, Vivian Fraser's sensitive renovation, with its respect for the past and embrace of the modern, won universal acclaim. As a venue, The Wharf epitomises the big, bold, adventurous creativity and distinctive Sydney glamour of the company it houses. Nearly 30 years on, visitors to the Sydney Theatre Company still feel a palpable sense of anticipation as they make their way down the long walkway to 'the harbour end'.

Utzon's Opera House

Considered 'the devil's work' by some and 'poetry, spoken with exquisite economy of words' by others, the Sydney Opera House quickly came to define a city, while its author drifted slowly into obscurity. 133 Macquarie Street (History House)

Terrace house on the western side of Macquarie Street that was designed by prominent architect George Allen Mansfield as a gentleman's residence for his uncle, Parrramatta politician George Oakes in 1871. In the early 1900s it was used as a boarding house, and then as medical rooms. In November 1971 it was officially opened as the second History House, the new home of the Royal Australian Historical Society.

64-66 Pitt Street, Sydney

Curved building on the corner of Pitt, Hunter and O'Connell Streets in the city that was built by the Fairfax family to house the offices of their newspapers, the Sydney Morning Herald and Sydney Mail, in the 1920s, on the site of the former Sydney Morning Herald building. Designed by Manson & Pickering, it was built by Stuart Bros in three stages. The newspaper moved to a new building at Broadway in 1954 and this building was sold to the Bank of New South Wales (later Westpac), when it was known as Wales House. Since the bank sold the property, it has been adapted and used as an office building and a hotel.

Bank of Australasia building

Bank building at Martin Place on the corner of George Street opposite the General Post Office. Designed in the Federation Romanesque style by American architect Martin E Raht for the Bank of Australasia, the building opened in February 1904. After the bank was merged with the Union Bank of Australia into the Australia and New Zealand Bank, the building operated as one of the ANZ Bank's head offices. In 1980 it was occupied by the United Permanent Society and later became a retail space.

Colonial Mutual Life building

Commercial building in Martin Place, built at the time of the widening and improvement of the street, which housed tenants including the Sydney Stock Exchange and the United States consulate. In 1976 it became one of the earliest examples of a modern redevelopment retaining the original building facade.

Colonial State Bank Centre

Office block at 52 Martin Place between Elizabeth and Phillip Streets, directly above Martin Place railway station. Built in the 1980s as a new State Bank building on the site of the former Art Deco Rural Bank of New South Wales. Designed by Peddle, Thorp and Walker, it includes a 36 level glass curtained tower and a two storey atrium above a marbled lobby. Ram's head plaques from the earlier building have been re-used at various points around the building. In 2004 television station Channel Seven established a studio on the ground floor of the building.

Coogee Aquarium and Swimming Baths

Pleasure gardens, baths and aquarium constructed at the northern end of Coogee Beach. The original 'Coogee Palace' covered the whole block bound by Dolphin, Beach, Bream and Arden streets. A promenade was constructed in 1889 could accommodate 3,000 people. From the 1920s, parts of the site were leased to shopkeepers and residents. In 1935, the aquarium displayed the shark at the centre of the shark arm murder case. A conservation order was placed in 1982 and in 1984 the building's huge dome collapsed. In 1987 the building was restored and reopened as The Beach Palace Hotel. In 2014 the building was purchased by the Merivale group and reopened as the Coogee Pavilion, a restaurant and bar complex.

Culwulla Chambers

Thirteen (originally twelve) storey office block at King and Castlereagh Streets designed in 1911 by architectural firm Spain, Cosh and Minnett for the estate of the late Sarah Jane Marks, who had died in 1909. The building was named after her family's property Culwulla at Jamberoo as a memorial to her from her sons Dr Herbert J W Marks and Walter Moffitt Marks. At 50 metres high, it was the tallest building in Sydney and fears were raised that Sydney would develop a New York style skyline with darkened streets. It was also considered a fire hazard as existing equipment was incapable of reaching this height. The city's building regulations were subsequently amended with the introduction of the 1912 Height of Buildings Act by the New South Wales government, restricting building heights to 45 metres. This remained in force until 1957.

Enmore Theatre

Longest running theatre and entertainment venue in Sydney on Enmore Road, Enmore. It has a distinctive Art Deco facade.

Marcus Clark Building

Nine storey department store built in 1913 for Marcus Clark & Co at at 827-837 George Street Railway Square as a furniture showroom, an extension to the existing flagship store at Railway Square on the corner of Pitt and George. In 1928 the building on George Street was modified to become the main store. The store closed in 1965 and the building was purchased by the Sydney Institute of Technology in 1966.

Purpose built head office of the Reserve Bank of Australia on the southern corner of Martin Place and Macquarie Street. Designed in 1959 by the Commonwealth Department of Works in the post war International Style for the newly created Reserve Bank, it was constructed between 1961 and 1964.

Retford Hall

Italianate mansion built for Anthony Hordern in Darling Point and named after Hordern's mother's birthplace in Nottinghamshire, England. It was built using Pyrmont sandstone at 23 Thornton Street and included seven bedrooms on the first floor, and a morning room, drawing room, dining room and breakfast room on the ground floor. After Hordern's death it failed to sell and remained in the Hordern family for almost a century until it was finally sold and demolished to make way for an apartment building, which retained the name Retford Hall.

State Office Block

Elegant thirty-two storey modernist office block designed by architect Ken Woolley in the 1960s to house the state government offices. The building occupied the block between Bent, Phillip and Macquarie Streets where the Government Printing Office and the Australian Subscription Library buildings had previously stood. The double sided New South Wales coat of arms in the building's lift lobby had been cast in oxidised bronze by sculptor Bert Flugelman. The demolition of the State Office Block in 1997 upset many Australian architects who claimed it was a very fine example of mid-1960s modernist architecture but it had been deemed unfit for purpose.

Thomas Walker Convalescent Hospital building

Hospital endowed by Thomas Walker on his estate Yaralla for convalescents who were sent from other hospitals to the greenery and fresh air of the hospital on the river at Concord. Designed by John Sulman and opened in 1893. The complex, including the Joanna Walker Memorial Childrens’ Convalescent Hospital that was also in the grounds, was transferred to the New South Wales Health Department in 1979. It is now occupied by the Rivendell School and the Rivendell Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health Service.

Yengo

Victorian Georgian stone house at 11-19 Queens Avenue, Mount Wilson that was built for industrialist Jesse Gregson in 1880. The house is one of the foundation houses of Mount Wilson, and the significant garden was created by Gregson with the help of Charles Moore and then J.H. Maiden.

Sydney's main gaol from its opening in 1841, later used as an internment camp, technical college and art school.

P&O Wall Fountain

Distinctive and significant public art work by renowned sculptor Tom Bass that was commissioned by P&O Orient Line for their new building on Hunter Street. It was fabricated in copper as a more affordable alternative to the original design of carving into the granite facade of the building.

The fountain became infamous after Oz Magazine published a satirical photograph in 1964 that showed three men of varying heights apparently using the fountain as a public toilet. Since then the work has been commonly referred to as 'The Urinal'. The photograph was the subject of a legal battle during which the editors of Oz Magazine were accused of promoting 'public pissing'. .
