Aborigines Progressive Association

The Aborigines Progressive Association had a leading role in organising the Day of Mourning on Australia Day 1938, and worked for full citizenship rights for Aboriginal people until the mid-1940s.

Day of Mourning 1938

Attended by Aboriginal activists from all over Australia, the Day of Mourning was the first national Aboriginal civil rights gathering.

Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras

The spectacular Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in 1983 had its origins in the brutal police response to a much smaller parade in 1978. The subsequent public furore and political activism caused draconian laws to be changed and eventual acceptance of the special place the Mardi Gras holds in Sydney's cultural life.

Great Strike of 1917

The Great Strike of 1917 is regarded as one of Australia’s largest industrial conflicts. The strike erupted on the NSW railways and tramways in August 1917 in response to the introduction of a new way of monitoring worker productivity. Thousands of working people across a range of industries were mobilised as the strike spread throughout NSW and Australia. In Sydney, there were extraordinary street marches and demonstrations led by the strikers and their supporters. On the other side of the political and class divide, strikebreakers were recruited to keep transport and industry running. While the strike lasted for only six weeks, its consequences – political, social and cultural – lingered for decades, shaping the political consciousness of generations.

Green Bans movement

When builders labourers, organised by their union, refused to work on projects they found socially or environmentally undesirable, in Sydney in the 1970s, they started a new form of environmental activism. The Green Bans were to change the way Sydney developed

Kelly's Bush

Part of the Woolwich Peninsula and originally home of the Wallumedagal clan, Kelly's Bush was saved from development by an unlikely coalition of middle-class women and communist union leaders in an action that saw the imposition of the first Green Ban.

Religious Opposition to World War I

With the exception of a small number of Quakers, Independents and Methodists, religious opposition to World War I and the issue of conscription came from a few, isolated individual voices. The Church of England whole-heartedly supported the war while for the main part, the Catholic Church remained silent.

Socialist Opposition to World War I

Most socialist organisations opposed World War I from the beginning, the militant vigour of their opposition fiercely suppressed through government censure and legislation. Their message - that the working classes were mere cannon fodder for the imperialist war machine from which they would not benefit - appealed to many Sydnysiders, especially as the war drew on, and its emotional, social and financial cost became more exhausting.

Sydney's Rainbow Crossings

On 25 February 2013, Sydneysiders woke to a rainbow crossing painted at the intersection of Taylor Square and Oxford Street, Darlinghurst - the starting point of Sydney's first ever Gay Mardi Gras march in 1978. Despite community support for the crossing, it was removed on 10 April sparking a do-it-yourself movement of pop-up rainbow crossings chalked on streets, footpaths and driveways all over Australia.

The Soldiers Riot of 1916

On 14 February 1916 soldiers based in the Australian Imperial Force training camps at Casula and Liverpool rioted, first in Liverpool, then at Central Station and in the city. The riot caused widespread damage, the death of one soldier-recruit, injuries to seven, multiple military and criminal convictions and contributed to the introduction of six o'clock closing across New South Wales.

Mrs Elsie Collimore was born in 1906 and was interviewed in 1986 for the 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900 to 1960' project. Here she remembers scenes from Liverpool during World War I, including the now famous soldiers' riot of 1916.

Women and World War I

Women played prominent roles in the anti-war, anti-conscription and peace movements in Sydney between 1914 and 1918, lead rallies and demonstrations and addressed outdoor meetings across the country. As sisters, wives and mothers, women were expected to sacrifice their menfolk in the ultimate act of patriotism yet many opposed the war for that very reason. For others it came down to a sense of moral obligation or issues of class and gender.

World War I and the Peace Society in Sydney

The many wartime tensions between members of the New South Wales Peace Society was, in microcosm, one small example of the way in which the World War I split and deeply divided Sydney. Between 1914 and 1918, political, pacifist and patriotic tensions between the Society's members fractured this once united group.

Wyatt, Annie

Wyatt was a tireless advocate for heritage protection and conservation who believed that women could make a difference in community issues. She helped found the National Trust and save some of Sydney's most iconic buildings.

Anti-conscription pamphlet produced by the Women's Peace Army in 1916. It was illustrated by Claude Marquet, the anti-war staff cartoonist at The Worker, and, despite the signature, a poem by EJ Dempsey, a writer on the pro-conscription Evening News who asked socialist RW Winspear to sign it. .

1890s strikes

Series of national strikes, beginning in August 1890 with the maritime unions and supported by coal miners, transport and agricultural workers, and followed by a shearers' strike in 1891. The strikes were both defeated, after military and police intervention, and large pay cuts ensued. The defeat led to the entry of the Labor Party into parliamentary politics.

Protest campaign conducted by The Rocks Residents Action Group against the redevelopment of the Rocks area between 1971 and 1974.

Black Moratorium

Political mobilization which culminated in a march on July 14 1972 from Redfern to Sydney demanding Aboriginal land rights and civil rights. It was attended by over 6000 Aborigines, labour workers and students.

Uprising by Irish prisoners at Castle Hill, north-west of Sydney, that was put down by the New South Wales Corps with 12 rebels killed and 9 later executed.

Series of clashes and mob violence which escalated from a verbal confrontation between life savers and a group of young men of Middle Eastern appearance.

Protest held on the sesquicentenary of the founding of Sydney, to highlight the Aboriginal suffering that resulted from the European invasion.

Freedom Ride

Protest trip in 1965 through country New South Wales which highlighted the segregation and lack of civil rights of Indigenous Australians. Students from the University of Sydney formed a group called the Student Action for Aboriginals and conducted the trip to also draw public attention to the poor state of Aboriginal health, education and housing.

Great Strike 1917

Mass strike, mainly in NSW and Victoria, and mainly involving railway and waterside workers, that began on August 2 1917 at Eveleigh Railway Workshops and Randwick Tramsheds. Originated in efforts by the railways to improve productivity through time and motion studies.The unions eventually capitulated.

Group of 13 women from Hunters Hill who enlisted the help of the Builders Labourers' Federation to prevent construction work by AV Jennings on the last remaining area of native bushland on the foreshore of the Parramatta River in 1971. The BLF applied a Green Ban to the area.

Protest movement that emerged in 2013 via social media in response to the removal of a temporary rainbow-painted pedestrian crossing at Taylor Square which had been created by the City of Sydney for the 35th Sydney Mardi Gras celebrations. Activists create rainbows and rainbow coloured crossings with chalk in public places to show support for equal rights and marriage equality.

Revolutionary organisation formed in Brisbane which agitated for the overthrow of the Russian monarchy and was strongly opposed to the Australian government and the war effort. Many members were deported for organising illegal demonstration and newspapers.

Community action group formed in 1972 to fight the massive commercial development proposed for Woolloomooloo. It was largely successful with the support of the Green Bans imposed by the Builders Labourers Federation.

Anderson, Joe

Aboriginal activist and leader known as King Burraga, who lived at Salt Pan Creek on the Georges River. In 1933 he made a film with Cinesound that was shown around the country, asking for recognition of Aboriginal people and representation in Federal Parliament:

'All the black man wants is representation in federal parliament. There is plenty of fish in the river for us all and land to grow all we want.'

Property owner from an early settler family in the Canterbury area who donated land for the Wesleyan church at Moorefields in 1850. By 1856 he had left the district and settled in Newtown.

Leader of the Irish convicts in the rebellion at Castle Hill. A stonemason and publican in his native Ireland who attempted to reorganise the United Irish network, he was transported for sedition and remained a rebel til his death.

Dwyer, Michael

Irish revolutionary and political exile who remained unsentenced until charged with sedition by Governor Bligh. Integrated into colonial society by 1810 he became a property owner and constable before bankruptcy lead to the debtors' prison and death.

Kisch, Egon

Czech journalist and communist who came to Australia in November 1934 as an anti-war and anti-fascism campaigner and spoke to large crowds at the Domain. Charged with being a 'prohibited immigrant', he was made to undertake the infamous 'dictation' test under the Immigration Restriction Act in Scottish Gaelic, which was not among the many languages he spoke, and he failed. His experiences here and eventual deportation in March 1935 lead to challenges to the Act.

Tucker, Margaret Elizabeth (Lilardia)

One of the earliest female Aboriginal activists. She was taken from her family at Wangaseda in New South Wales in 1917 at the age of 12 and trained as a domestic servant at the Cootamundra Girls Home. She was sent at 16 to a wealthy grazier's family in Neutral Bay as a domestic servant, but was abused in her first placement and sent to another family. She ran away but was caught and sent into service again in Walgett. She stayed in service until 1925 and spent her adult life campaigning for Aboriginal rights and welfare. Tucker, also known as Aunty Marge and Princess Lilardia, was one of the founding members of the Australian Aborigines League in Victoria in 1932 and one of the organisers of the National Day of Mourning in Sydney in 1938. In 1968 she became the first Aboriginal woman to join the Commonwealth’s Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs. She was awarded an MBE in 1968.

Mrs Elsie Collimore remembers scenes from the Liverpool soldiers' riot of 1916, interviewed in 1986

Mrs Elsie Collimore was born in 1906 and was interviewed in 1986 for the 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900 to 1960' project. Here she remembers scenes from Liverpool during World War I, including the now famous soldiers' riot of 1916.
Transcript

ELSIE: It was always a military town here and there was always soldiers.

INTERVIEWER: Do you remember anything about World War I?

ELSIE: Yes. I remember going down to get the Evening News . I think I was about seven or eight. And it had big black letters across the paper: 'England at War', and I remember running home, we lived in Northumberland Street, to tell my mother because I heard a man read it out. And that was the beginning of it all. There were soldiers, their camp was across where STC [Standard Telephones and Cables is [was]. It was all tents. There was no other camp around. I think there was a camp at Casula because I remember there was a riot. We were going to school one day, and when the kids heard the train, and the trains always used to blow 'Cock a Doodle Doo' when the troops were going away. And of course we heard all this noise and everyone ran to the station and when we got over there, there were soldiers hanging onto the train and they were in the engine, oh great old to-do. So we didn't know what was happening; it was a riot. The soldiers from the two camps had met and took control of the place. Shops were all closed and there was military police everywhere and anyone that had robbed them [the soldiers] or cheated them, they got even. They broke the windows of the shops and filled all the kit bags with pickles and whatever was in the windows. Then when we got down the street all the shops were closed and the military police were walking up and down and they only allowed about five people at a time in the shops.

INTERVIEWER: What was the general feeling like during the war?

ELSIE: Oh well of course there was no wireless or anything to hear, you had to all Ã¢â‚¬â€œ there'd be a crowd down outside the paper shop of an evening waiting for the paper to come in because that was the only way you had any news. There was no wireless or TV to tell you anything.
