Appin massacre

The ongoing dispossession of the Aboriginal people who lived on the Cumberland Plain by white settlers lead to ongoing violence and assaults. The government ordered reprisals by the military included the massacre of at least 14 Aboriginal people near Appin in 1816.

Bankstown Soldier Settlement Milperra

Faced with disabled returned soldiers from World War I, the New South Wales government sponsored group settlements on Sydney's fringes, hoping that the ex-soldiers would be able to support their families on small farms. The Bankstown settlement had 30 families by 1918, but for most of them, the experience was not a success.

De Vernicourt, Pierre Lalouette

Son of a French nobleman and anatomist, Pierre Lalouette de Vernicourt was a captain in the French Army in India at the time of the French Revolution, before seeking asylum in England. He came to Sydney and farmed 100 acres at Castle Hill, keeping largely to himself, until his death in 1804.

HMAS Watson

The site of many Aboriginal carvings, HMAS Watson has been part of Sydney's military defences since 1854.

Mackellar, Keith Kinnaird

Keith Kinnaird Mackellar was an older brother to poet Dorothea Mackellar, and was the only Australian soldier whose remains were brought back to Australia of over one thousand men who lost their lives in the Boer War.

McGuire, George

Born in Mauritius, Albert McGuire became a keen volunteer soldier with the Irish Rifles during the 1910s.

O'Connell, Maurice

Born in Ireland, Maurice O'Connell served the British Empire as a military officer in Ceylon, Malta and twice in New South Wales.

Recruiting for World War I

As the embarkation point for many World War I soldiers, Sydney was a centre for recruiting volunteers from all over New South Wales, and also strongly affected by the bitter conscription referenda campaigns of 1916 and 1917, and the subsequent political fallout.

Returned Soldiers on the Ultimo Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour

The Ultimo Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour, now housed in the Ultimo Community Centre, lists the names of 36 men who served in World War I. We can only be sure 22 came home but their stories reveal the hardships of war service, larrikin behaviour, heroism and injuries that must have been a terrible burden to returned soldiers.

Snapper Island

Snapper Island is the smallest island in Sydney Harbour. It is also the island that has been the most changed and reshaped by human manipulation.

The Fallen on the Ultimo Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour

The Ultimo Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour, now housed in the Ultimo Community Centre, lists the names of 36 men. Four of those men died as a result of their war service and were lost to their families and friends - people who openly grieved their passing. Their grief is a reminder of the true cost of war, for the fallen and for their family, friends, and community.

The Soldiers Riot of 1916

On 14 February 1916 soldiers based in the Australian Imperial Force training camps at Casula and Liverpool rioted, first in Liverpool, then at Central Station and in the city. The riot caused widespread damage, the death of one soldier-recruit, injuries to seven, multiple military and criminal convictions and contributed to the introduction of six o'clock closing across New South Wales.

Ultimo Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour

The roll of honour from the former Ultimo Presbyterian Church, now located in the Ultimo Community Centre, lists 36 men associated with the Ultimo community who served in the First Australian Imperial Forces in World War I. The board, instigated in 1916 shortly after the arrival of Reverend John Muir, is part of a tradition in which honour rolls were used to memorialise, mobilise, recruit and mourn.

Victoria Barracks

Victoria Barracks, on what is now Oxford Street in Paddington, has been continuously occupied by military personnel since it was built in 1841. It is an outstanding example of colonial military architecture.

War Memorials for World War I

The shocking losses of Australian servicemen and women in the Great War prompted communities across Australia to find ways to memorialise those who died, and honour those who served. As no centralised authority drove or coordinated this task, the form of each memorial reflects the community that raised the funds to build it. Balmain was the first suburb in Australia to erect a war memorial, but in time, the towns, suburbs, workplaces and institutions of Sydney found a way to fulfil the covenant 'we will remember them.'

War Memorials for the Sudan and Boer Wars

The earliest monuments to Australian soldiers in Sydney are for the Sudan Contingent in 1885, and the Boer War in South Africa between 1899 and 1902. These plaques honour soldiers who served and died and, in one case, women who worked as nurses during the Boer conflict.

War Memorials to World War II and later conflicts

While memorials honouring the dead of the Great War were adapted to mark the sacrifice of those lost in World War II, the losses of a new generation led to innovations in memorialisation. Those who died on active service in Sydney, and those lost in conflicts Malaya, Korea, Borneo and Vietnam are remembered in new memorials in the city and suburbs, and along the road to Canberra. Women, prisoners-of-war and recipients of the Victoria Cross are also memorialised in Sydney.

Defence Act 1903

Legislation which the government the power to conscript for the purposes of home defence. The legislation did not allow soldiers to be conscripted for overseas service.
It was the first pieces of legislation passed by the new Commonwealth government.

Next of Kin Memorial Plaque

Bronze plaque of 120mm manufactured in Britain to commemorate those British and Empire service personnel, both men and women who died between 4 August 1914 and 10 January 1920. It is estimated over 1 million were made.

Shirase sword

Seventeenth century Japanese samurai sword presented by Lieutenant Nobu Shirase, the leader of the Japanese Polar Expedition, to Professor Edgeworth David as a gesture of friendship and thanks for his support during the expedition's stay in Sydney from May-November 1911. In 1979 the sword was presented to the Australian Museum by Mary David, the professor's daughter. The sword was made by Mutsu no Kami Kaneyasu, a master swordsmith who worked in the period 1600-1650.

Wooden board featuring three panels which include the names of 36 men who enlisted in the AIF during World War I. Initiated by Reverend John Muir in 1916 it originally listed 19 names and was placed in the Ultimo Presbyterian Church where it stayed until the church fell into disuse. The board was installed in the entrance to the Ultimo Community Centre in March 2015.

Conscription referendum 1916

Whilst universal military training for Australian men aged 18 to 60 had been compulsory since 1911, the referendum, if carried, would have extended this requirement to service overseas. It arose as British pressure mounted for Australia to continue to supply adequate forces for the European war.

Conscription referendum 1917

British pressure to supply a sixth division of 7000 men per month led to the second referendum that would have seen compulsory reinforcements augment dwindling volunteer recruitment. Whilst it was defeated it remained highly divisive politically, socially and within religious circles.

Armed takeover of government in New South Wales, in which Governor William Bligh was deposed by officers of the New South Wales Corps, led by George Johnson, and supported by John Macarthur. Randwick Military Hospital

Military hospital established during World War I in Randwick in the former Asylum for Destitute Children building and the Catherine Hayes Hospital. The grounds were in use by the millitary by August 1914, while the buildings were still occupied by children and Asylum staff. The last of the children left the Asylum in October 1915 and by November 300 wounded soldiers were being treated there. The site was formally taken over by the NSW Government in 1916. In 1953 remaining soldiers being treated at the hospital were transferred to the Concord Repatrition Hospital, and the buildings became part of the Prince of Wales Hospital.

Carlisle, Walter Thomas

Labourer who enlisted as a private in the 13th Reinforcement, 19th Battalion and proceeded to France in November 1916. In July 1917, he was admitted to hospital in Le Havre for venereal disease for a total of 65 days. In October 1917, he was admitted to hospital with an injury to his wrist before he contracted 'trench fever' and was transferred to England. He proceeded back to Le Havre and was wounded in action on 5 July 1918, suffering a severe shrapnel wound to his left arm. After convalescing in England he was returned to Australia.

Chapple, Reginald Arthur

Farmer who enlisted as a private in the 18th Reinforcements, 2nd Divisional Artillery Column and served in Suezl, Egypt before going to France in March 1918. He was wounded in action in August 1918 and admitted to hospital. After Armistice Day, he assisted the head gardener at Longford Castle in Salisbury, England who reported 'Chapple was attentive to his work and proved himself to be a keen and enthusiastic student of English farming methods'. He sailed to the United States of America for 'agricultural purposes' and after six months returned to Sydney via Canada.

Chapple, Roland Clyde

Secretary for an insurance company who enlisted as a private in the 12th Reinforcement, 30th Battalion, trained in Liverpool and Rosebery Park Camp and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in August 1916. In England, he received instruction in bomb throwing at a school in Lyndhurst before proceeding to Étaples, France in April 1917. He was wounded 'accidentally' and admitted to hospital with a severe gunshot wound to his left eye. He spent two months in hospitals in England and was promoted to lieutenant in July 1917. After returning to Australia he was discharged as medically unfit.

Between April 1916 and June 1917 he was reprimanded several times for absence without leave, behaving 'in an insolent manner' and also 'hesitating to obey an order'. Doling was awarded a Military Medal for 'unselfish devotion to duty' during the Battle of Menin Road and in August 1918, he was admitted to hospital for a severe gun shot wound to his right thigh. After marrying in England, he returned to Australia.

Donald, James Shand

Ironmoulder who enlisted in the 11th Reinforcement, 19th Battalion. He was promoted to Extra Depot Corporal in England, and then Acting Corporal in September 1916 in Etaples, France, before reverting to private. In November 1916 he was hospitalised in England with trench foot syndrome. He was sent back to Etaples and was admitted to hospital again in May 1918 with influenza and transferred to England before being sent back to Australia suffering from synovitis in his left knee.

Harvie, James Fraser

His battalion was responsible for the defence of Russell's Top until their withdrawal from the peninsula in December 1915. He arrived in Egypt in January 1916, after which his service record notes various instances of misbehaviour including: absence without leave, 'failing to salute an officer' and being found 'out of bounds in a brothel'. He would serve with the Imperial Camel Corps, 12th Light Horse Regiment and Australian Mounted Division before returning to Sydney.

Harvie, William Coleridge

Clerk who enlisted as a private in the 14th Reinforcement, 18th Battalion and served in France. He suffered a gun shot wound to his leg in August 1916 and was transferred to England. He was ill and transferred to England again in March 1917. He proceeded to Camiers, France in May 1917 and was admitted to hospital with trench fever two months later. He was reported missing in action in October 1917 and was later found wounded having been exposed to poisonous gas. He spent time in hospital and training camps in England before he was sent back to Camiers. In May 1918, he was admitted to a field hospital with diarrhoea and rejoined his unit before he was 'struck off strength' in January 1919.

Hunt, Joseph

Marine who arrived in Sydney on the Charlotte in the First Fleet. On 20 March 1789, in exchange for a pardon, Hunt told authorities all he knew about the gang organsing thefts from the Government Stores. On 27 March 1789, his co-conspirators James Baker, James Brown, Richard Lukes, Thomas Jones, Luke Haines (or Haynes) and Richard Askew (or Asky) – were hanged. Hunt was transferred to the Sirius and went to Norfolk Island, and returned to England on the Gorgon in 1791.

He forfeited 19 days' pay as punishment.

He was admitted to hospital with pneumonia in Rouen and in 1917 and 1918 he was admitted to hospital for venereal disease on a number of occasions before he was sent back to the Field Bakery in Rouen in January 1919.

In April 1918 he spent time in hospital in France with a sprained left ankle and was punished in August and September for absence without leave.

Officer of marines, landowner and author renowned for his cruelty to convicts. Eventually, disgusted with colonial affairs he returned to England and published The Felonry of New South Wales, an attack on all whom he fancied had opposed him in the colony. The subsequent duel in Sydney in 1840 only reinforced his unpopularity.

Student who enlisted in the 8th Reinforcement, 1st Battalion and was sent to Gallipoli in November 1915. He was sent to Egypt and then transferred to the 14th Machine Gun Company in March 1916, sailing for Marseilles, France. In January 1917 he was appointed lance corporal, however, two months later was found guilty of 'hesitating to obey an order given by an officer' and was reduced in rank. While in England, he was mentioned in the British General, Sir Douglas Haig's, despatches. He was promoted to lieutenant in August 1918 but returned to Australia shortly afterward.

He quarrelled with John Macarthur on the voyage to Sydney, who attempted to have Nepean court-martialled before Grose settled their dispute.

He embarked on 7 November 1918, just four days before Armistice Day. The troopship was recalled and he disembarked in November 1918.

Marine who arrived in Sydney on the Supply as part of the First Fleet. He went missing in late October 1788 and although a convict was questioned, no charges were laid. His disappearance was not resolved.

Clerk who enlisted in the 53rd Battalion, disembarking at Liverpool, England in October 1917. He was attached to the Australian Army Pay Corps in England in December 1917 and then to the Australian Army Medical Corps. He was attached to duty at a hospital in Tidworth, promoted to ER Corporal in May 1918, promoted to ER Sergeant in May 1919 and was then discharged from the AIF in 1920. He chose to stay in England to marry and work.

Marine on the First Fleet who took up land on Sydney's southern boundary. A storekeeper since 1792, he was appointed as Provost Marshal in February 1796. He died suddenly in 1804 while visiting the Hawkesbury and was described as 'universally respected for his humanity in acquitting himself of the duties of his office; the generosity and benevolence of his heart; the affability of his manners, and the placidity of his disposition'.

Trott, David (Jock)

Cook who enlisted in the B Company, 3rd Battalion and took part in the landings at Anzac Cove, Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. He was injured in July and after rejoining his unit they took part in the attack at Lone Pine. He and his battalion participated in the Battle of Pozieres in July 1916. In February 1917, he was placed under arrest having shot away fingers on both of his hands. In March 1917 he was found guilty and sentenced to 30 days heavy labouring duties for self-inflicted wounds.

Former convict who was sentenced to seven years' transportation to New South Wales on 5 July 1787 for poaching trout. Charles Whalan became a sergeant in the New South Wales Corps, was the orderly sergeant to Governors, Philip Gidley King and Lachlan Macquarie, and commanded the Light Horse Guard.

Wilson, William Gavin

Boilermaker who enlisted in the 38th Battalion, attached to the Cyclist Company Reinforcements who proceeded to Rouelles, France in August 1917. He was wounded in action in November and reprimanded in July 1918 for neglecting to obey an order. In August he was wounded in action and admitted to hospital with a shrapnel wound. In November 1918 he was found absent without leave (AWL) and was arrested in England in January 1919. He was sentenced to 60 days detention, but served 8 days before returning to Sydney.

Matraville Garden Village

Garden village planned by the State Government in 1917 under the Returned Soldiers' Holdings Act with tenancy restricted to war-injured returned soldiers, sailors and war widows. Voluntary donations of both labour and building materials helped erect 93 homes and provided for a memorial reserve, parkland and sites for public buildings and churches but the scheme suffered mismanagement and corruption and by the 1970s most had been demolished.

On 16 March 1918, he was invalided back to Australia having suffered a gun shot wound to his chest. He died on 12 April 1919 at No 4 Australian General Hospital, Randwick, aged 20, and is buried in Rookwood Cemetery.)

Mr Jack Healy recalls training horses for the army in Liverpool in 1928, interviewed in 1986

Mr Jack Healy was born in 1908. He was interviewed in 1986 for the 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900 to 1960.' He recalls joining the remount unit [responsible for training horses for the Australian army] at Liverpool in 1928.

INTERVIEWER: When did you join the army?

JACK: 1928.

INTERVIEWER: And what made you decide to join the army?

JACK: Well, I was out of work and a couple of chaps that I knew, as a matter of fact I knew the Commanding Officer too. Then a vacancy came up, chap left, I went down to present myself and went for the medicals and got the job.

INTERVIEWER: Did you view it as a job?

JACK: Oh sure. Money. Yes, money. I think everybody did that.

INTERVIEWER: Was it hard work?

JACK: Oh, yes and no; young horses, handling young horses, driving, riding, all that sort of thing, yes.

INTERVIEWER: You were in the remounts were you?

JACK: That's right. Handling horses, breaking horses, training them for army manoeuvers, military purposes as it may be, staff horses, and ordinary artillery horses.

INTERVIEWER: Whereabouts did they get the horses from?

JACK: Hired them in the country, they were called Murray Walers. And they also bought them for the Indian army. Their horses came from here too. They were a kind of what you'd call a buggy horse really, bigger than a pony, about 16-hand type of thing.

INTERVIEWER: How did they get the horses to Liverpool?

JACK: Train. There used to be a train line went out from here to Holsworthy in those days, used to be the German camp.

INTERVIEWER: Did you know much about horses before you started?

JACK: Well, we always had horses when I was a kid. They were Tuxedo breed, American. We had the fastest horse on Hoxton Park Road.

Mr John Costa was born in 1928 and was interviewed in 1986 for the 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900 to 1960' project. Here he recalls his mother feeding American soldiers on their Italian family farm during World War II.

JOHN: My parents were from Italy, from Sicily. My father came out and three years after my mother came out. My people, they came to Chipping Norton, we had a vineyard there and a market garden and I can remember then across the river from our place there was Warwick Farm Racecourse, where quite a few American sailors were in there at the time and they used to come across the river. The river at that time you could walk across it at low tide, it wasnÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t very deep, and they used to come around and up to the house, ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã‹Å“cause a lot of Americans were Italians too, and they used to come over there and have feeds of spaghetti and stuff, Mum used to feed them. I can never forget their faces (we had a couple of cows) they used to like milk shakes, egg flips, and all that sort of thing. They really made us at home - we used to go across with them and they used to give us a few supplies, to keep us going because we had a family, IÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢m from a family of ten, and they were all born around the Liverpool area, all except my sister [who] was born in Pamarea in Italy.

Mrs Elsie Collimore was born in 1906 and was interviewed in 1986 for the 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900 to 1960' project. Here she remembers scenes from Liverpool during World War I, including the now famous soldiers' riot of 1916.

ELSIE: It was always a military town here and there was always soldiers.

INTERVIEWER: Do you remember anything about World War I?

ELSIE: Yes. I remember going down to get the Evening News . I think I was about seven or eight. And it had big black letters across the paper: 'England at War', and I remember running home, we lived in Northumberland Street, to tell my mother because I heard a man read it out. And that was the beginning of it all. There were soldiers, their camp was across where STC [Standard Telephones and Cables is [was]. It was all tents. There was no other camp around. I think there was a camp at Casula because I remember there was a riot. We were going to school one day, and when the kids heard the train, and the trains always used to blow 'Cock a Doodle Doo' when the troops were going away. And of course we heard all this noise and everyone ran to the station and when we got over there, there were soldiers hanging onto the train and they were in the engine, oh great old to-do. So we didn't know what was happening; it was a riot. The soldiers from the two camps had met and took control of the place. Shops were all closed and there was military police everywhere and anyone that had robbed them [the soldiers] or cheated them, they got even. They broke the windows of the shops and filled all the kit bags with pickles and whatever was in the windows. Then when we got down the street all the shops were closed and the military police were walking up and down and they only allowed about five people at a time in the shops.

INTERVIEWER: What was the general feeling like during the war?

ELSIE: Oh well of course there was no wireless or anything to hear, you had to all Ã¢â‚¬â€œ there'd be a crowd down outside the paper shop of an evening waiting for the paper to come in because that was the only way you had any news. There was no wireless or TV to tell you anything.

Mrs Jessie La Trobe, who was born in 1910, was interviewed in 1986 for the 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900 to 1960.' Her family owned a newsagency in Liverpool and here she describes delivering newspapers to local military camps during World War II.

JESSIE: We had all the camps to do and down there, where all the houses are now on the left hand side, near Warwick Farm Station, before you cross the bridge, that was a big army camp. It was the British navy that really had it and they called it the 'Golden Hind' and they treated it like a ship. When they went in the gate they went 'onboard', when they came out they came 'ashore'. Then we had the Americans in the centre of Warwick Farm racecourse so we had all that to do, and all the extra people who were about. We had nothing to do with Moorebank and Ingleburn as far as papers went but there were a lot about, a lot of people in the street. I still have my pass to go aboard the Golden Hind. They gave me a pass because we used to have to take papers in to the boys, the paperboys. I used to have to pick the papers up at the railway station, Warwick Farm railway, and take them and deliver them into the camps to the boys in different parts of the camps because they were big camps, and take them down, and then the boys would ride their bikes back here and check their money in.

Mrs Lillian Dulcie Watson was born in 1904 and interviewed in 1986 for the 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900 to 1960.' Mrs Watson was witness to the crash of an American Air Force plane, due to engine failure over Hammondville, during World War II.

INTERVIEWER: Do you recall the plane crashing?

LILLIAN: Down the back here? Yes.

INTERVIEWER: Can you tell me a bit about that?

LILLIAN: Yes, I can remember that quite well. It was night time, or dusk, and an air raid warning went and of course the next thing you see all these planes and this plane came round over the house and you could sort of hear the wheels, it wasn't very far off the roof. The next thing we heard Bang! Of course all the kids were out like a shot out of a gun, they were going no matter what happened, they were going to see what happened, and of course they came home and all the tales they came home to tell us. Some gruesome tales they were, some of them. Anyhow, they came home and they had bullets, all sorts of bits and pieces they had, they brought home for souvenirs. I didn't know what to do about them. 'Well' I said, 'You're not taking them into the house, you can put them out in the shed.' A couple of days afterwards, a chap came knocking on the door. He was an American negro, and he said to me 'You got children?', a very abrupt sort of a man he was. I said 'Yes' . He said 'Have they been down the scrub (as he called it)?' And I said 'Oh yes, naturally,' I said, 'All the children have been down there.' He said 'Have they brought anything home from the wreck?'. I said 'Yes'. He said 'You know you can't have them. They belong to the American camp.' I said 'Oh well, you better come and take them'. So he came out and he had a big box and he lumbered all this stuff into the box and he said 'Thank you, you'll hear more about this.' I said 'Oh boy'. So when Don [son] came home from school, because the first thing, all the kids dive out to the shed to see all their souvenirs. And he came in and he said 'What happened to all our things'. I said 'Oh, a chap came and took them all away.' 'Oh, he had no right to do that, we found them!' But they took them just the same; but he never ever came back, we never heard any more about it.

Mrs Marjorie Gough was born in 1908 and interviewed in 1986 for the 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900 to 1960.' Here she talks here about her contribution to the war effort in both world wars.

MARJORIE: I knitted socks for the first war [WWI] when I was seven. I was born in England and came out. War broke out in 1914 and we came out in 1915 and our boat was the last boat that came out to Australia and then they stopped bringing people out. And we used to knit, in the last war [WWII] you'd knit in church and everywhere, in the last war. Now you wouldn't see people knitting in church but we knitted in church, socks and things for the soldiers.

INTERVIEWER: Who would get the knitted items to the soldiers? Would it be through Red Cross?

MARJORIE: Through Red Cross, yes, and we used to put a little note in and say who did them. My sister, she's still got it I think, she got a reply back from one of the chaps. But the Red Cross, they would supply the wool, and then [we'd] knit for all the soldiers, that was in the first war [WWI]. Then in the second war [WWII] [we] knew people that we'd send them to them.

INTERVIEWER: It wasn't through an organisation in the Second World War?

MARJORIE: No, just knitted them and sent them to people that we knew; little balaclavas and socks, jumpers, things like that. I used to like knitting..
