Soldier who joined the AIF in 1904 and rose to brigadier general during World War I. After the war he returned to his first career of real estate agent, retaining the honorary rank of brigadier general.

Hetherington, Norman (Heth)

Puppeteer, artist, teacher and cartoonist who began experimenting with marionettes with Clovelly Puppet Theatre in 1952. He went on to present puppets on television from 1956. He is best known as the creator of the marionette 'Mr Squiggle', who drew with his nose and appeared regularly on ABC children's television from 1959-1999, Australia's longest running children's television series. Hetherington was the sole operator and voice of Mr. Squiggle.

First Fleet seaman who played a role in the exploration of Tasmania and Australia's eastern seaboard. He allegedly sailed with Captain James Cook on HMB Endeavour and was credited in the Windsor and Richmond Gazette of 1890 as being the second Englishman after Sir Joseph Banks to step ashore at Botany Bay in 1770. However, no primary source material has been found to confirm this. Hibbs was part of the crew during the wreck of HMS Sirius on its way to Norfolk Island. While at Norfolk Island his wife arrived aboard Surprize with her baby girl, whom they raised as their own.

Hicks, Mary Jane

Sixteen year old domestic servant who had recently arrived in Sydney from regional New South Wales, and was the victim of a gang rape at Mount Rennie (now Moore Park) in September 1886. The trial of eleven of her assailants polarised the colony, especially when four of the men were hanged for the crime in January 1887. The nuns of the Convent of the Good Samaritans took her in after the assault and helped her move to Christchurch, New Zealand in February 1887.

Higgins, Eleanor

Convict and early settler of the Epping area. She was tried at the Old Bailey, London on 12 December 1787 for stealing four linen sheets and was sentenced to transportation for 7 years. She married David Kilpack who received a grant of 80 acres in Ryde which was known as the 'Field of Mars'. When David died she sold part of the land but continued to farm in her own right.

Convict and butcher who murdered emancipist Simon Burn in Parramatta on 5 October 1794 when Burn had attempted to defend Hill's partner from him. He was executed on 15 October and buried the next day.

Hill, Richard

Carpenter and butcher who became a wealthy landowner both on the Liverpool Plains and in New Zealand before a career in politics. He lived in an old cottage at 43 Bent Street in the city until his death. He was interested in the welfare of Aboriginal people, and employed an Aboriginal coachman. In 1892 he published 'NNotes on the Aborigines of New South Wales : with personal reminiscences of the tribes formerly living in the neighbourhood of Sydney and the surrounding districts' with George Thornton.
