Metcalfe, John Wallace

John Wallace Metcalfe was a librarian and library educator. He was Principal Librarian of the Public Library of New South Wales (1942-1958), Librarian of the University of New South Wales (1959-1966), and the founding Director of the School of Librarianship at the University of New South Wales (1959-1968). He was a leader in the Free Library Movement in the 1930s and was one of the founders of the Austraian Instuitute of Librarians in 1937 (later the Library Association of Australia and then the Australian Library and Information Association). He was awarded the HCL Anderson Award by the Library Association of Australia in 1973.

Milford, Frederick

Surgeon and medical lecturer. Milford was apprenticed at the Sydney Dispensary in 1849 before being sent to England for medical training. He returned to Sydney in 1859 as surgeon at St Vincent's Hospital, then became the First Lecturer in the Principles and Practice of Surgery at the University of Sydney in 1882.

Milius, Pierre Bernard

French mariner who was part of the Baudin expedition that arrived in Sydney in April 1802. Lieutenant and second in command on board the Naturaliste, he was promoted to the rank of commander at Timor on 20 October 1801. The expedition arrived in Port Jackson in April 1802 but due to illness he left the expedition in Sydney on 18 May 1802. He travelled via China to Mauritius where he rejoined the expedition. Baudin had died in September 1803 and Milius was given command of the Geographe for the remainder of the expedition.
