Rooty Hill

Western residential suburb, known by this name since 1811. Theories about the origin of the name include the amount of tree roots that were cleared to create a road in the area, a Hindi word for food - "ruti" - or that it was named after Rooty Hill Road on Norfolk Island .

Convict who arrived on the First Fleet ship Alexander and became a successful farmer on 48 acres in the Nepean district.

Rope, Elizabeth

Convict who arrived on the First Fleet ship Prince of Wales, married Anthony and raised a large family in the Nepean district. It is thought that their first child , Robert, born 30th October 1788 was the first white child to have been conceived and born on Australian soil.

Eastern harbourside suburb named for Governor Arthur Phillip's friend and mentor George Rose, later Treasurer of the Navy. It was the site of a flying boat airport until 1974 and seaplanes still land there.

Rose Bay Lodge

Home designed by John Verge and built for James Holt, it became Sir Daniel Cooper's home in 1843 and had several more illustrious owners and tenants. After many unsympathetic renovations it was restored in the 1990s.

Rosebery

Inner southern suburb, named for the British prime minister the Earl of Rosebery who visited Sydney in 1883-84. Planned by John Sulman as a model suburb for both housing and industry in 1911-1920, it was the site of an early racecourse, then an industrial area, it is now being redeveloped and gentrified.
