City of Sydney Archives

The City of Sydney Archives holds items from as early as 1842 when the Municipal Council of Sydney was established, and manage, preserve and provide access to more than 1 million items, including documents, photographs, maps, plans and data. The collection consists of City of Sydney corporate archives, items collected from the community relating to the City of Sydney local area and published reference material. Ryde

Wallumetta to its traditional owners, the Wallumedegal, the land that became Ryde was settled early and provided food to the growing town. From the 1870s, subdivision started, and the railway brought more development from 1886. In the twentieth century, Ryde became suburban and one of Sydney's earliest shopping centres was built there in 1957.

Published by commercial map makers Higinbotham, Robinson and Harrison in the late nineteenth century, the maps of the Atlas of the Suburbs of Sydney provide a portrait of the city's municipalities during a period of rapid growth and suburbanisation.

Marsfield

Northern residential suburb, originally part of the much larger Field of Mars Common established in 1804. It began to be cleared in the 1870s and the first land sales were held in 1885.

Ryde

Residential and commercial suburb on north shore of Parramatta River, named after the town on the Isle of Wight where Mary Turner, an early resident in the area had been born. It was the third British settlement in Australia after Sydney and Parramatta.

Gladesville

Residential suburb located on the northern banks of the Parramatta River, named after ex-convict John Glade who had a farm in the area from about 1806. The original Gladesville Bridge, completed in 1881, was replaced in 1964.

Field of Mars parish

One of the 57 parishes of the County of Cumberland, named for the area named 'The Field of Mars' by Governor Phillip in 1788 when he made land grants to members of the military forces.
