Samuels, Joseph

Convict sentenced to transportation at the age of 14 for theft in London in 1795. In 1803 he robbed the house of Mary Breeze on Back Row (modern day Phillip Street) in collusion with others and the investigating police officer Joseph Luker was murdered. Samuels was sentenced to hang for the robbery, but not the murder. On the day of execution however, three attempts to hang him failed and the sentence was reprieved. He was transported instead to Risdon Cove, a penal settlement at Van Dieman's Land and then to Newcastle. In 1806 he made an attempt to escape from Kings Town with seven other convicts but the boat was overturned and they were all assumed drowned.

Sandgate Cottage Randwick

Two-storey sandstone cottage built by Simeon Pearce as part of a row of five investment properties, its first tenant was Edwin Penfold. It had several names before it was acquired by the Commonwealth Government in 1918 and became the 'Woodville Red Cross home' for World War I veterans. In 1928 Catherine and Harold Tippler purchased it and owned it until 1966 after which it changed hands numerous times before it was restored in 1987 by Randwick Council. It housed the Randwick and District Historical Society's museum and archives collection and was a Heritage Centre for the municipality until 1992. It is now a real estate agent office.

Station on the private railway line constructed in the 1880s servicing industrial and oil refinery companies adjacent to the Parramatta River near Camellia. The disused line is planned to provide stabling and maintenance facilities for the Parramatta Light Rail project.

Southern residential suburb named by William Rust for the residence of the Prince of Wales after whom he had named his hotel. Its original name, 'Strippers Point', referred to the timber felling in the area.

Sandringham Gardens

Garden and memorial gates which commemorate King George V and King George VI. They were built on the site of the old bandstand in Hyde Park and include bronze memorial gates incorporating the crests and heraldic motifs of each king, a memorial tablet with inscription and dedication, and a memorial fountain with mosaic inlay.

Aboriginal boxer who achieved fame and success in the middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions in his short career. He died in 1952 at the age of 26 in a truck accident. In 1998 he was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame.

Southern residential suburb named for the palace of Prussian king Frederick the Great in Potsdam, Germany. It was the name of the house built by Thomas Holt (1811-1888) for his German wife, and is French for 'without care'.

A civil engineer who, as the Vaucluse Council Town Clerk, designed the Parsley Bay suspension bridge. He later became an alderman on Vaucluse Council, serving twice as mayor. in 1895 he had been appointed Secretary of the South Head General Cemetery Trust, but in 1938 was charged  with forgery and larceny after misappropriating cemetery funds and sentenced to three years in gaol.
