Sow and Pigs Reef Lightship

A series of ships anchored adjacent to Sow and Pigs Reef in Sydney Harbour as an aid to navigation. The first was the Rose in 1836. She was replaced by HMS Bramble in 1856 which was in turn replaced by Bramble II in 1877. In 1912 an acetylene gas light was used instead.

Minesweeper built during World War I which changed hands several times before operating from Sydney as a fishing trawler. Requisitioned as a minesweeper in World War II she returned to trawling in 1947 but was smashed on rocks at Little Bay and finally pounded to pieces.

SS Heroic

Steel hulled steam tugboat of 258 tons built for Thomas Fenwick which was commandeered by the British Admiralty in World War I. After further service in World War II it returned to Sydney as a working tug. The wreck can now be seen in Homebush Bay.

American ocean liner and cruise ship which did much to develop tourism in the Pacific in the 1920s.

SS Minmi

Collier which plied between Melbourne and Newcastle for almost 10 years before hitting the rocks at Cape Banks and breaking up with the loss of two lives. The stern section is still visible on the rock platform on the inside of Cape Banks.

Passenger ship with the Orient Line that operated between England and Australia between 1929 and 1962. During the 1940s the ship served as a troopship.

Jubilee Class ship of 12,000 tons and 565 feet built in Belfast for the London-Cape Town-Sydney run. Launched in 1899 it took Australian troops to the Boer War and returned with injured soldiers and was also used as a transport ship during World War I.

Stirling Castle

Brig of 351 tons chartered to bring Scottish immigrants to Sydney in 1831, carrying the founders of the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts. Its destruction on the north eastern coast of Australia in 1836 was later to become infamous when the survivors were saved by local Aboriginal people before returning to civilisation.

Simple and energetic dance that became an Australian teenage craze in the early 1960s with the rise of surf music. Some councils tried to ban it as they feared buildings would collapse. In February 1964 45,000 people  turning up to Lane Cove National Park  for the Stomp National Championships.
