Dunn, John

Eldest of nine children of convicts Michael and Margaret Dunn who joined Ben Halls gang in 1864. In January 1865, he shot dead Constable Samuel Nelson in the bungled robbery of Kimberleys Inn at Collector, near Goulburn. He was hanged at Darlinghurst Gaol aged 19.

East, John Barton

English artist who arrived in Sydney from Madras in 1832, and returned there in 1835. A talented portrait and miniature artist who had exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London every year between 1818 and 1830, he executed portraits of Billy Blue, James Dowling and many others, since lost, that were highly praised in the colony. His name has frequently been transcribed as TB East, or TB Earl, instead of JB East.

Eddy, Edward

Chief commissioner of the New South Wales Railways and key figure in the development of the railway in the colony. He wrote: 'I take so much delight in my work, and I can see how, in a country which will owe much to the judicious management and extension of its railways, I could be of great service to the Colony, and also obtain credit for myself'. Although he did not succeed in bringing the railway to the centre of Sydney, he enlarged the tramway network and permitted the first experiments in electric traction.
