Long, William

Convict and wealthy wine and spirits merchant who was sentenced to transportation for seven years on 15 September 1813. In Sydney, after initially working as a blacksmith, he became licensee of the Saracen's Head on Gloucester Street in The Rocks from 1827. He then took over the Commercial Tavern in George Street in 1831, which was one of the most lucrative inns in Sydney. As a result of his success, he purchased the mansion Tusculum for 3010 pounds. On his death, he left an estate of over 100,000 pounds.

Loomes, John James

Public servant and magistrate who held the role of Acting City Coroner in 1961 before becoming City Coroner in 1963. He was in charge of the inquest into the deaths of Dr Gilbert Bogle and Margaret Chandler, whose bodies were found on the bank of the Lane Cove River on New Year’s Day 1963, and although the cause of their deaths remained a mystery, the coronial investigation led to many sensational and scandalous revelations about their lives. He remained in the role of Coroner until retiring on 22 May 1970.

Lord, John

Sydney businessman and importer who arrived in Sydney in 1827 and occupied Bello Retiro at Newtown before moving to Hobart. He owned the Marquis of Lansdowne and used it to trade with India and elsewhere. In 1838 he was involved in the campaign to import Indian labourers to replace English convicts. He was declared bankrupt in 1842 and died in 1863.
