Westpac Bank Building

Bank building at 341 George Street, built in the Inter-War Commercial Palazzo style which reflected the commercial optimism of the pre-Depression years. Part of the site was originally used by the first military barracks and parade ground before being subdivided in 1850. The first Bank of New South Wales occupied the site from 1853. The bank acquired additional land as the business expanded.

Whalan, Charles

Former convict who was sentenced to seven years' transportation to New South Wales on 5 July 1787 for poaching trout. Charles Whalan became a sergeant in the New South Wales Corps, was the orderly sergeant to Governors, Philip Gidley King and Lachlan Macquarie, and commanded the Light Horse Guard.

White City

Paddington amusement park designed as a white city with mountains of snow. It had Australia's biggest scenic railway and merry-go-round and closed in 1916. The White City Stadium, located at the White City Tennis Club, was built on the site in 1922. Once an iconic part of Sydney's sporting life, the property fell into disrepair and was sold by Tennis NSW in 2005.

White Horse Hotel, George Street

Hotel on George Street between King and Market Streets, a few doors down from the Royal Hotel. Named the White Horse by publican George Watkins in 1838 when he moved from his earlier hotel of the same name in Pitt Street. Renamed Nissen's Cafe for a brief period in the early 1880s until it was taken over and refurbished by pugilist Larry Foley in 1885. A gymnasium and boxing ring were accommodated behind the hotel and it became well known as 'Larry Foley's White Horse'. Foley had operated another hotel in the early 1880s on York Street, also known as Foley's Hotel, but the license was cancelled in 1884. The building was demolished in July 1890 to make way for the construction of the Strand Hotel. 

White Wings factory

Food manufacturing factory and flour mill in Chippendale established by HL Bussell early in the twentieth century which operated until 1982 when it moved to Kingsgrove.
