Dunbar shipwreck

In stormy weather, in the dark, after 81 days at sea, the Dunbar hit the rocks below The Gap, breaking up immediately. All but one on board were drowned, in one of the worst disasters in Sydney's history.

Duncan Dunbar

Clipper constructed for the Scottish ship owner Duncan Dunbar in 1853 at Sunderland. It was shipwrecked off Brazil in 1865 with no loss of life.

Dunkirk Hotel

Three storey Federation hotel building on the corner of Harris Street and Pyrmont Bridge Road in Pyrmont which replaced an older building dating from at least 1876. It was one of 25 hotels which once existed on the peninsula to cater for the workers in the abattoir, quarries and woolstores, the backbones of the local economy. Originally known as the Butchers Arms Hotel, it was renamed in 1940 to commemorate the World War II Battle of Dunkirk in France earlier in 1940.

Company established in 1929 as a result of a merger between the Dunlop Rubber Company of Australia Ltd. and the Perdriau Rubber Co. Ltd, particularly associated with the manufacturer of rubber tyres for the growing automobile industry. The company established a service centre for motorists at 27 Wentworth Avenue in August 1929.

Dunn, John

Eldest of nine children of convicts Michael and Margaret Dunn who joined Ben Halls gang in 1864. In January 1865, he shot dead Constable Samuel Nelson in the bungled robbery of Kimberleys Inn at Collector, near Goulburn. He was hanged at Darlinghurst Gaol aged 19.
