HL Bussell & Company Ltd

Company formed in Chippendale by Henry Lytton Bussell after his arrival in Sydney in 1904. It produced flour products under the White Wings brand name until 1952 when the company was acquired by Gillespies Bros Pty Ltd and the company name changed to White Wings Pty Ltd.

HMAS Adelaide

Cruiser of 5500 tons commissioned at Cockatoo Island in 1922 and decommissioned in 1946.

HMAS Albatross

Carrier commissioned at Cockatoo Island in 1929. After being decommissioned in 1933 the ship became a repair vessel for the Royal Navy, playing a vital role in the Allied invasion of Normandy. By 1948 it had been converted to a passenger vessel and in 1949 reached Sydney with 1000 displaced persons. It was finally scrapped in Hong Kong in 1954.

HMAS Australia II

Cruiser of 10,000 tons constructed in Scotland which saw service in European and Pacific waters during World War II and was eventually sold for scrap and broken up in England in 1956.

HMAS Biloela

Fleet collier constructed at Cockatoo Island, the first ship built entirely of Australian materials to an Australian design. After being decommissioned in 1927 the ship was sold and eventually sunk by submarine off Scotland in 1940.

Destroyer tender of 15,500 tons used as a maintenance ship, training vessel and as a support vessel after Cyclone Tracy in Darwin in 1975. It was decommissioned and sold in 1990.

Light cruiser commissioned in England in 1935 which saw service in the Mediterranean and as convoy escort off the Australian coast before being sunk by the German cruiser Kormoran in 1941 with the loss of all crew.

The first aircraft carrier of the Royal Australian Navy commissioned in England in 1948 which saw action as a troop transport in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. It was sold for scrap in 1975.

The oldest and smallest First Fleet ship. Built in 1759 as an armed tender of 175 tons it became the colony's only link with the outside world after the loss of the HMS Sirius in 1790. Often mistakenly referred to as the HMS Supply.

HMS Beagle

Sloop of the Royal Navy converted to a survey barge which took part in three expeditions. The second voyage in 1836 proved to be a ground breaking scientific expedition which lasted five years as it explored South America, New Zealand and parts of coastal Australia.

Originally a collier, the ship was bought and equipped to accommodate the scientific expedition conducted by Captain James Cook between 1769 and 1771 in the southern hemisphere.

HMS Glatton

Naval ship of 54 guns, converted to convict transport. Previously commanded by Captain William Bligh, it took part in the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801.

Two deck troopship with 44 guns which operated as storeship, guardship and hospital ship at various times.

HMS Guardian

Convict ship of 879 tons and 140 ft long which hit an iceberg in December 1789 about 13 days out from the Cape of Good Hope. Some convicts survived and were given pardons on arrival in Sydney.

Atholl class 28 gun corvette of the Royal Navy which was converted to a survey ship for work in the Pacific.

Ship which had previously been part of the East India trade before being commissioned by the Royal Navy in 1806. It was to bring Governor Macquarie to the colony in 1809 to replace Governor Bligh.

Built as a survey ship for the Royal Navy it surveyed much of the easte coast of Australia, the New Hebrides and New Zealand before being converted to a three masted schoner for passenger and cargo trade.

North-western residential suburb on southern border of Richmond, adjacent to the University of Western Sydney. Subdivided in 1966, it is named after the estate of William Cox, with streets named for members of the Cox family, principals of Hawkesbury Agricultural College, racehorses bred on the estate, and other names drawn from the history of the district.
