Barnsley, Elizabeth

Convicted of stealing a bolt of muslin valued at six pounds in 1788, Barnsley was transported for seven years. John Nicol described her as 'a noted sharper and shop-lifter' whose family 'for one hundred years back, had been swindlers and highwaymen'. According to Nicol, she petitioned the government agent to wear her own clothes instead of convict dress and she was 'very kind to her fellow convicts, who were poor. They were all anxious to serve her. She was a queen among them'.

The home of cinema pioneers Franklyn and Mabel Barrett, who developed and edited 15 silent pictures in their home between 1919 and 1926. The house was bequeathed to Randwick City Council by Harrie Barrett and was developed as a 'Sustainable Demonstration House'.

Barrett, Thomas

Convicted thief and forger who was involved in the mutiny on the Mercury in 1784 and arrived in Sydney in the First Fleet. The Charlotte medal, Australian earliest colonial art, is believed to have been engraved by him while on board the Charlotte. He was the first man hanged in Sydney after stealing food in February 1788.

Residence and surrounding land at Cooks River, near the south western border of Sydney Park. Built by AB Sparke in about 1815 and subsequently leased to merchant and starch manufacturer Adam Wilson until the 1840s. The land was in use as a racecourse and sporting venue by the 1850s before becoming the site of several brickworks. The ruins of the house were demolished in 1953.
