Cobcroft, John Frederick

Sometimes referred to as Cockcroft, he was convicted of assault and highway robbery and sentenced to death on 7 May 1788, which was commuted to transportation for life. While he sailed aboard Scarborough his common law wife, Sarah, was offered free passage to the colony on Neptune. Cobcroft was granted a conditional pardon in 1794 by Francis Grose. In July 1795 he was granted 30 acres of land at Wilberforce. He and Sarah had 10 children together and married in 1842 when Cobcroft was aged 79.

Midwife and farmer who emigrated from England to Sydney as one of Australia's first free settlers after her spouse had been sentenced to transportation for assault and highway robbery. She was part of a small group of women who accepted a government offer of a free passage. The couple had 10 children and married in 1842 when Sarah was aged 70. She worked as a midwife in the Wilberforce district. Her death notice notes she left 'a large family to lament their loss, having lived to see the fifth generation'.

Iza Coghlan was one of the first two women in New South Wales to graduate in medicine at the University of Sydney in 1893. The second Australian woman doctor to register with the New South Wales Medical Board, she pioneered private medical practice in Sydney and was the first Sydney woman doctor to operate two long-standing concurrent practices. Dr Coghlan formed the first women’s life-saving class in New South Wales, and established the New South Wales Medical Women’s Association, serving as its first president. She dedicated her later career to the health and welfare of school children across New South Wales, serving as government medical officer to the Department of Public Instruction.

Cohen, Edward Aaron

Merchant, parliamentarian and Jewish community leader who emigrated to Sydney and managed his father's wholesale grocery firm on George Street. He moved to Melbourne in 1842 and became an auctioneer and then moved to Sydney before returning to Melbourne again. In the late 1840s, he acquired land at Haslams Creek in Rookwood. In August 1862 the government purchased 200 acres of Cohen's land at Haslams Creek for 2000 pounds to turn into Rookwood Cemetery.

His wife and 10 children arrived separately in Sydney and his brother-in-law was Joseph Simmons. He was granted a conditional pardon in 1842 and established a grocery store on George Street called H Cohen and Sons.
