Parkes, Henry

Arriving in Sydney 1839, friendless and with a young family, Parkes went into business, but also began a political career that lasted over 40 years. He influenced nearly every aspect of colonial government, taking a particular interest in education, and was the driving force for Australian Federation, though he did not live to see it.

In 1858, Sydney had become a bustling prosperous town, with a university, commercial centre, restaurants and fine town houses. As in London, though, these amenities existed side by side with poverty and misery for some citizens.

The end of transportation

By the late 1840s, a strong political movement to end the convict system had formed in Sydney. Large pastoralists fought to keep their supply of cheap labour, but by 1850 the tide had turned, and no more convicts were transported to Sydney.
