Colebee

A Cadigal man who became one of the first to interact with the Europeans, Colebee was a leading Aboriginal figure in Sydney Town in the early years of the colony. He was associated with the white-bellied sea eagle.

Fairlight

An early market garden for Sydney, Fairlight developed after the 1850s, with large houses on extensive grounds. It was called after Fairlight House from the 1890s, though only made official in the 1930s. Inhabited by Manly's leading citizens, Fairlight became more accessible when trams came through in the 1910s, and grew between the wars. Shops and denser development followed.

Little Manly

Part of the Bassett-Darley estate tied up in legal wrangling until 1877, Little Manly was not subdivided until the 1880s. Baths and a boatshed were built there, and later made way for a public reserve.

Little Manly Baths

The Gentlemen's Baths, built in 1879, were damaged several times by storms by 1896, and were taken over by the gasworks on Little Manly Point. They remained in disrepair, and repeatedly damaged by storms and floating debris, until Manly council rebuilt them in the 1980s.

The Corso

The Kay-ye-my people walked for thousands of years along the track between the cove and the beach at Manly, but the first boardwalk was only built in 1855 when Henry Gilbert Smith began developing Manly as a resort. The Corso had a hotel at each end, and most of Manly's commerce along its length, until the rise of the car and the shopping mall in the twentieth century.

Pemulwuy

Pemulwuy was a powerful Aboriginal resistance leader against the British settlers who occupied his land. Through the final decade of the eighteenth century, Pemulwuy led guerrilla attacks against settlers' farms, burning their huts, maize crops and livestock, and plundering their possessions.

Nanbarry

A survivor of the smallpox of 1789, Nanbarry became an interpreter and intermediary between his people and the new arrivals, and later went to sea.

Arabanoo

One of the first Aboriginal people to meet the Europeans at close quarters, Arabanoo taught them much about the customs and manners of his country, but died in the smallpox epidemic of 1789 which was so deadly to Sydney's first people.

Woollarawarre Bennelong

Thrust into history by his abduction, Bennelong led a tumultuous life, becoming the best known Aboriginal figure in the first decades of European settlement. His story, plagued by myths, connects twenty-first century Australia with the social and spiritual Aboriginal world that existed before the English colony of New South Wales.

Yemmerrawanne

Yemmerrawanne was one of the first Eora men to meet the British, and was a regular visitor to the home of Captain Arthur Phillip, Governor of New South Wales. When Phillip returned to London in December 1792 Yemmerrawanne, and his kinsman Bennelong, travelled with him. Although a young man, Yemmerrawanne died in London. A headstone marks his passing, but the location of his remains is unknown.

Willemering

Willemering, a clever man or karadji from the Caragal of Broken Bay, was the man who speared Governor Phillip at Manly Cove.

Governor Phillip and the Eora

What was Governor Arthur Phillip's relationship with the Eora, and other Aboriginal people of the Sydney region? Phillip's policies, actions and responses have tended to be seen as a proxy for the Europeans in Australia as whole, just as his friend, the Wangal warrior Woolarawarre Bennelong’s allegedly tragic life has for so long personified the fate of Aboriginal people since 1788. To fully imagine those early years, we must see them through the twin lenses of British and Eora perspective and experience to glimpse what was happening, and why. This allows a nuanced and complex view, and the banishment once and for all the notion that there can be only one 'right' story.
