Health care

Aboriginal Health College, Little Bay

Designed for and by Aboriginal people, the Aboriginal Health College at Little Bay is connected to both culture and environment.

Aboriginal Medical Service

Inspired by the success of the Aboriginal Legal Service, and founded by many of the same activists, from 1971 the Aboriginal Medical Service provided free medical care to Aboriginal people from its shopfront in Redfern.

Brislington

Brislington is Parramatta's oldest existing dwelling house and stands on land once used by the Darug-speaking Burramatta people. Initially a family residence, Brislington was a medical practice for almost a hundred years, followed by the Parramatta District Hospital's Nurses' Home up until the 1970s. Since 1983 the building has been home to the Brislington Medical and Nursing Museum.

The colonial observations of Surgeon John White

Surgeon John White, an officer of the First Fleet, was responsible for the health of the infant penal colony. His journal, and those of his contemporaries, reveals that food shortages were a serious problem for colonial officials, convicts and Aboriginal people. While there was some early collaboration between Aboriginal people and colonists regarding food, tensions escalated into violent incidents and an unknown number of fatalities. White, however, offered care to all the residents of Port Jackson, including Nanbaree, who White took to England.

Sydney Medical Mission

Charity established to provide health care services and medicine to underprivileged adults and children in Sydney’s poorest inner suburbs that operated between 1900-1917. It was established by Dr Julie Carlile-Thomas and funded by Emma Dixson. Its first premises consisted of three small rooms in a building on Elizabeth Street before it was relocated to Macquarie Street. Mission doctors provided a unique service for sick Sydneysiders who were unable to leave their homes to enter hospital, particularly women with young children, and chronic incurable patients for whom no hospital bed was available. In its early years, a dilapidated phaeton pulled by an old horse, and driven by an even older man with a long white beard, transported the doctors on their house calls, and became a common sight in what were then known as the ‘slum’ suburbs of Sydney.
