Bondi rock carvings

Aboriginal people, like later arrivals, found Bondi an attractive place, with its abundant nearby fresh water, fish and rocky shores full of shellfish. On the rocky platforms are huge carvings of fish, sharks, whales and people, thousands of years old.

Bull Cave

Cave near Campbelltown containing Aboriginal rock art depicting cattle with horns, painted by Tharawal people who had seen the escaped cattle at Camden before they were found by the British. Part of the Keith Longhurst Reserve.

Ridge on Lycon Plateau which extends north west for about 3.2 kilometres from Mount Hay Range west of Flat Top to the Fortress.

Small cave in Flat Rock Gully where it is believed Henry Lawson slept off his frequent tavern visits in the Naremburn area.

Sandstone plateau lying to the north of Sydney Harbour.

Kings Tableland

Plateau of eroded sandstone south of Wentworth Falls which forms the main southerly spur of the Blue Mountains Range and the start of the southern escarpment above the Jamison Valley.

Lovers Leap, Maroota

Sandstone escarpment on the Hawkesbury River at Upper Crescent Reach, Portland Head. The Darug and Darkinyung name for the landmark is probably Yerumbola, recorded in 1829.

Mount Solitary

Sandstone mesa about 6.5 kilometres south of Katoomba.

Narrow Neck

Sandstone plateau just west of Katoomba which runs south for 10 kilometres between the heads of Mitchell and Cedar creeks.

Orphan Rock

Sandstone pinnacle at the head of Kedumba Valley about 400 metres south west of Katoomba Falls.

Portland Head Rock

Sandstone escarpment on the Hawkesbury River (Dyarubbin), so named because settlers thought the rock resembled the profile of an English prime minister, the Duke of Portland. The area became known as Portland Head, and the river downstream as Lower Portland Head. The Aboriginal name for the landmark was probably Dakal, recorded in 1829.

Rock formation near Katoomba said in Aboriginal legend to represent three sisters who were turned to stone. A spectacular local landmark, they stand 922, 918 and 906 metres tall.

Settlers called this escarpment ‘Lovers Leap’. The Darug/Darkinjung name is likely to be Yerumbola, meaning ‘two cliffs’.
