Muddy Creek

Watercourse about 5 kilometres long that rises near Allawah Railway Station, and flows through Frys Park, Hogben Park and Rockdale Park into the Cooks River at Kyeemagh. The upper part is now carried mainly by stormwater drains and the lower sections have been canalised.

Mudie, James

Officer of marines, landowner and author renowned for his cruelty to convicts. Eventually, disgusted with colonial affairs he returned to England and published The Felonry of New South Wales, an attack on all whom he fancied had opposed him in the colony. The subsequent duel in Sydney in 1840 only reinforced his unpopularity.

Muir, Ian Miller

Student who enlisted in the 8th Reinforcement, 1st Battalion and was sent to Gallipoli in November 1915. He was sent to Egypt and then transferred to the 14th Machine Gun Company in March 1916, sailing for Marseilles, France. In January 1917 he was appointed lance corporal, however, two months later was found guilty of 'hesitating to obey an order given by an officer' and was reduced in rank. While in England, he was mentioned in the British General, Sir Douglas Haig's, despatches. He was promoted to lieutenant in August 1918 but returned to Australia shortly afterward.

Muir, Jane

Scottish born wife of Presbyterian minister Reverend John Muir who served at Ultimo Presbyterian Church from 1916-1920. She was the supervisor of the Presbyterian Missions bands for 24 years and the Presbyterian Missionary Womens Union established the Jane Muir Memorial Fund in her memory after her death in 1943.

Muir, John

Minister who worked for his businessman father before he was ordained in 1888. He migrated with his wife Jane and three sons serving in Bega and Nowra before he moved to Ultimo in 1916. From 1920 he served in various churches and as a visiting chaplain at Sydney Hospital.

One of the 'Scottish Martyrs', Muir was transported for sedition in 1794. He escaped from the colony in 1796 only to be hunted by the Spanish and English before being wounded and offered refuge in France.

Mungo Scott flour mill, Summer Hill

Flour mill in Summer Hill built c1921 by flour millers Mungo Scott to take advantage of the goods railway line between Wardell Road and Darling Harbour. A huge fire in the mill in 1927 was believed to have been caused by sparks caused by passing trains igniting stored flour. In 2009 the mill's operations moved to Maldon in Victoria and the building was converted into residences.

President and founder of the Australian Branch of the British Red Cross Society. She was also the wife of Sir Ronald Munro Ferguson, Governor-General of Australia in 1914-20. In 1918 she was appointed Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) for her work during World War I.
