The road south

Built as an access road to the farmland south of Sydney town, the road south gradually pushed far beyond Cooks River to the Georges River ferry.

Watercourse about 9 kilometres long rising south of Narwee and flowing generally north east into the Cooks River.

Tempe House

Home built on the bank of Cooks River by Alexander Spark which became a social mecca for Sydney's merchants and bankers. It is a rare remaining example of Neo-Classical Georgian architecture in Sydney.

The Warren

Victorian Gothic mansion with over 30 rooms on the banks of the Cooks River at Marrickville. Filled with art and sculptures the house was built of sandstone quarried on the property.

River that flows through south-west Sydney, starting at Graf Park, Yagoona, through to Botany Bay at Kyeemagh. The river was extensively polluted by industry and its course was changed to accommodate the runways of Sydney Airport.

Arncliffe

Largely residential southern suburb, close to Sydney Airport and bordering Wolli Creek. It was named after a village in North Yorkshire, England.

Bardwell Park

Southern residential suburb, named after settler Thomas Bardwell whose grant was bounded by Wolli Creek. Building of the East Hills railway line in 1931 opened up the area for home sites.

Bexley

Southern residential suburb, named for Bexley in London by James Chandler, an early landholder. It was developed into suburban housing after the railway reached nearby Hurstville in 1884.

Industrial and residential suburb on the northern shore of Botany Bay, immediately east of Sydney Airport. Originally seen as a country retreat, it saw industry flourish in the post-Second World War era.

Busy southern commercial and residential suburb which grew after the railway line, opened in 1884, allowed residential development and subdivision. Immigration from Hong Kong since the 1990s has created a vibrant Chinese community.

Kingsgrove

South-western residential suburb. The name originates from King's Grove Farm which was the land grant to Hannah Laycock in 1804.

Kogarah

Southern residential suburb considered to be the centre of the St George area. Its named is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning 'place where the rushes grow'.

Marrickville

Inner-western residential suburb with an industrial heritage on the Cooks River, named after the Marrick estate of Thomas Chalder which was subdivided in 1855. The post-Second World War period saw the influx of mainly non-English speaking people, attracted by the availability of factory work and cheap housing.

Tempe

Inner-west suburb on the northern bank of Cooks River which grew from the workers camp established to build the Cooks River dam in 1839. By the 1850s it was also home to limeburners, woodsmen and fishermen.

Wolli Creek

Southern suburb with an industrial heritage now being redeveloped as a residential and commercial centre. It was separated from Arncliffe in 2002.

Unwin's Bridge

Bridge originally constructed by convict labour in 1836 for Frederick Wright Unwin across the Cooks River at Bayview Avenue, Tempe. It was replaced by the present bridge in 1891.

Dam constructed by convict labour at Tempe using quarried stone from the nearby cliffs. It allowed a road link to the city but quickly caused problems of pollution and flooding.
