Ngemba artist and printmaker from Bourke, New South Wales, who was a founding member of Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Cooperative.

Samuels, Joseph

Convict sentenced to transportation at the age of 14 for theft in London in 1795. In 1803 he robbed the house of Mary Breeze on Back Row (modern day Phillip Street) in collusion with others and the investigating police officer Joseph Luker was murdered. Samuels was sentenced to hang for the robbery, but not the murder. On the day of execution however, three attempts to hang him failed and the sentence was reprieved. He was transported instead to Risdon Cove, a penal settlement at Van Dieman's Land and then to Newcastle. In 1806 he made an attempt to escape from Kings Town with seven other convicts but the boat was overturned and they were all assumed drowned.

Aboriginal boxer who achieved fame and success in the middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions in his short career. He died in 1952 at the age of 26 in a truck accident. In 1998 he was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame.

A civil engineer who, as the Vaucluse Council Town Clerk, designed the Parsley Bay suspension bridge. He later became an alderman on Vaucluse Council, serving twice as mayor. in 1895 he had been appointed Secretary of the South Head General Cemetery Trust, but in 1938 was charged  with forgery and larceny after misappropriating cemetery funds and sentenced to three years in gaol.
