Albemarle

Built as a transport for the French Army, it was captured by the British and became a merchant ship in the East India Company before carrying over 280 convicts to the colony in 1791. Two convicts were executed for an attempted mutiny on the voyage. In 1793 it was captured by a French privateer.

Albion Mills, Darling Harbour

Steam flour mill opened in January 1833 by John Terry Hughes and John Hosking in Darling Harbour on Sussex Street at the foot of Market Street. The mill was underinsured when it was destroyed by fire in March 1841, and Hughes and Hosking borrowed extensively from the Bank of Australia to try to recoup their losses. Their subsequent bankruptcy in 1843 led to the collapse of the bank.  Hughes continued trading after 1846 with a new Albion Steam Mill on his estate in Surry Hills.

Laneways like this were once common all over the city - the result of custom and chance rather than planning. The southern side is a reminder of the older warehousing period.

Albion Street Children's Court

Former court building constructed by builder CC Coleman of Petersham for 9555 pounds. It was soon overcrowded and outdated with a reputation for violence and was closed when the boys were transferred to Lidcombe in 1983. It has since been used by the Sydney City Mission and community organisations.

Alexander Mackie College of Advanced Education

Teacher training college established in 1958. Classes were conducted at five different sites in inner-Sydney, with the main campus in Albion Avenue, an administrative campus was in Commonwealth Street and other venues ine in Flinders Street. In 1981 the fine arts training component became the City Art Institute in Paddington and the remainder moved to Oatley as the St George Institute of Education.

Alexandra canal

Canal excavated out of Sheas Creek between 1887 and 1900 and named in honour of Princess Alexandra, Princess of Wales and later Queen consort to Edward VII. It has a catchment area of 1380 hectares which includes the suburbs of Alexandria, Moore Park, Redfern. Surry Hills and Rosebery.
