North-western town on Hawkesbury River named after the 3rd Duke of Richmond, Master General of the Ordnance. One of five townships in the region established by Governor Lachlan Macquarie, it contains many historic buildings and is the location of a Royal Australian Air Force base. In 1829 the name used for the area by the local Aboriginal people was recorded as being Marrangorra.
