Archibald fountain

The result of a bequest in the will of JF Archibald, the Archibald fountain took 13 years to organise and complete. Its French sculptor, François-Léon Sicard, never visited the site, which has become one of Sydney's enduring landmarks.

Glebe Jubilee Fountain

Public fountains were once a familiar sight in Sydney. Street widening, city improvements and the public's desire for hygienic sources of water led to their demise. The Glebe Jubilee fountain on Glebe Point Road at the corner of Broadway, Glebe, is one of a few remaining public fountains.

Anderson Fountain

Fountain which was moved to Prince Alfred Park from near the old town hall. It commemorates Dr Mathew Anderson, a surgeon, who arrived in 1827 to take up the post of Colonial Government Surgeon. He campaigned tirelessly for public access to fresh and continuous water supply and drinking fountains.

A large and elaborate Art Deco fountain in Hyde Park constructed to commemorate the association between Australia and France in World War I. It depicts a bronze Apollo surrounded by other mythical figures.

Busby's Bore Fountain

Fountain built to commemorate the first piped water supply in Sydney from Lachlan Swamps, now Centennial Park.

Centennial Memorial Fountain

Fountain commemorating the centenary of the colony of New South Wales, and that of Parramatta itself. Controversy surrounded it's dedication as it remained unfinished, without a clock, for over 20 years.

Sandstone Doric fountain designed by Francis Greenway and Mrs Macquarie. It was built in 1819 by stonemason, Edward Cureton and demolished c1883 to make way for statue of Thomas Sutcliffe Mort.

El Alamein Memorial Fountain

Fountain to commemorate the Australian soldiers of the 9th Division who fought near the Egyptian town of El Alamein in two battles which helped change the course of World War II. As a work of modernist design it was a Sydney icon in the 1960s and 1970s.

Sandstone fountain donated by John Frazer, merchant and Member of the Legislative Council in 1870. It was carved in Pyrmont sandstone by Lawrence Beveridge.

Frazer fountain St Mary's Road

Ornate canopied drinking fountain on a roundabout near St Mary's Cathedral carved in Pyrmont sandstone by Lawrence Beveridge. When access to public drinking water was not easy in the nineteenth century it was a generous and welcome gift.

Governor Phillip fountain

Monument in the Royal Botanic Gardens commemorating Governor Arthur Phillip. Sculptor Achille Simonetti was commissioned to create the work by Sir Henry Parkes as part of the 1888 Centennial celebrations and it was unveiled on 22 June 1897 as part of the Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee.

Sandstone fountain with ornamental pillar on top of basin, erected by Waverley District Cricket Club to the memory of Charles W. Gregory. In 1965 it was rededicated to three club members, James Webb, Victor Jackson and Peter Fingleton, accidentally killed in a tragic motor incident while traveling to Parkes to play cricket.

Jubilee Fountain Randwick

Sandstone drinking fountain surmounted by an obelisk which was erected outside the former Randwick Post Office (now known as Easts House) to celebrate 50 years of Randwick Municipality. Tenders were released in February 1909, requesting the cost to build the fountain was 'not to exceed 100 pounds or be less than 50 pounds'.

Lewis Wolfe Levy Fountain

Drinking fountain in the Royal Botanic Gardens, with a red granite base with Art Nouveau bronze statue of a young girl standing amid reeds, a heron and frogs. The fountain was a gift to the people of Sydney in 1889from the Levy family in memory of Lewis Wofle Levy (1815–85), politician and businessman. The statue, by C B Birch (1832–93), is an important example of aestheticism in Sydney.

Macquarie Place Drinking Fountain

Cast iron canopy fountain imported from Glasgow in 1870, one of eight, to provide public amenity when many houses were built without water connections. It was moved into Macquarie Place in the 1970s. The canopy carries the City's coat of arms, an instructive Bible inscription, and the less charitable demand 'Keep The Pavement Dry!'. The actual drinking fountain is missing.

Moore Park Cricket Association Memorial Drinking Fountain

Stone fountain with a semicircular metal plaque erected by the cricket association members to commemorate their fallen comrades. The plaque contains two classical female figures, encircled with wreaths, labelled Courage and Peace.

Elaborate drinking fountain commemorating members of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows who served and died in World War I.

P&O Wall Fountain

Distinctive and significant public art work by renowned sculptor Tom Bass that was commissioned by P&O Orient Line for their new building on Hunter Street. It was fabricated in copper as a more affordable alternative to the original design of carving into the granite facade of the building.

The fountain became infamous after Oz Magazine published a satirical photograph in 1964 that showed three men of varying heights apparently using the fountain as a public toilet. Since then the work has been commonly referred to as 'The Urinal'. The photograph was the subject of a legal battle during which the editors of Oz Magazine were accused of promoting 'public pissing'. .

Fountain in the courtyard of Sydney Hospital with a distinctly Australian design, comprising a group of brolgas surmounted by black swans displaying their crimson beaks. It was erected in 1907 in memory of the actor Robert Brough who had died in Sydney in 1906. The fountain was imported from the Colebrookdale Factory in England.

St Jude's Fountain Randwick

Ornate sandstone fountain on the corner of Allison Road and Church Street, Randwick, which supplied water for the use of local residents and horses from an underground spring. The fountain was carved out of Pyrmont sandstone by Walter McGill and established with the assistance of Randwick Council and public subscription. Four hundred children from the nearby Destitute Children's Asylum watched former mayor, John Dawson, break a bottle of water over the fountain at its opening in October 1866. The original St Jude's Well, which was situated opposite the fountain, was opened in 1858 but dried up soon afterwards.

Tank Stream Fountain

The cascading fountain with bronze animals is an invitation to children to explore, and its dedication â€œto all the children who have played around the Tank Streamâ€ evokes a sense of this place stretching back into its pre-urban landscape when the Tank Stream carried fresh water into Sydney Cove. This Stephen Walker sculpture was donated to the City by John Fairfax and Sons Ltd in 1981.

Vietnam War Comradeship Memorial

A sunken area in the park with a fountain and pond which has a bronze statue of two soldiers, one Australian and one Vietnamese. The sculptor was Do Trong Nhon.
