Hill, Edward Smith

Wine and spirit merchant who was also a naturalist and a Trustee at the Australian Museum. He was a supporter of Aboriginal people, learning the Sydney language and gave lectures on culture. Aboriginal vistors to Sydney would camp at his house in Woollahra.

Convict and butcher who murdered emancipist Simon Burn in Parramatta on 5 October 1794 when Burn had attempted to defend Hill's partner from him. He was executed on 15 October and buried the next day.

Hill, Richard

Carpenter and butcher who became a wealthy landowner both on the Liverpool Plains and in New Zealand before a career in politics. He lived in an old cottage at 43 Bent Street in the city until his death. He was interested in the welfare of Aboriginal people, and employed an Aboriginal coachman. In 1892 he published 'NNotes on the Aborigines of New South Wales : with personal reminiscences of the tribes formerly living in the neighbourhood of Sydney and the surrounding districts' with George Thornton.

Hilton Hotel

Hotel, part of the international Hilton Hotel chain, that lies between George and Pitt Streets, opposite the Queen Victoria building. The first Hilton Hotel building was constructed in 1969 on the site of Tattersall's Hotel and the Royal Arcade to designs by architectural firm Kolos and Bryant. This modernist building was largely demolished in 2001 and, after a design competition won by Sydney architectural firm Johnson Pilton Walker, was replaced by a new building that opened in 2005.

Hilton hotel bombing 1978

Explosion in the early hours of 13 February 1978 that occurred when a bomb, hidden in a bin outside the Hilton hotel on George Street, was collected by a council garbage truck. Three men were killed, garbage collectors Alec Carter, 37, and William Favell, 36, and police officer Paul Burmistriw, 31, who died from his injuries nine days later. The target was believed to be the Prime Minister, Malcolm Fraser, and other heads of state who were at the hotel for a Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting (CHOGM).

Hinchcliff Wool Stores

Two three storey gabled warehouses built to service the international wool trade of the late nineteenth century. Two loading bays and hoist pulley indicate how the bales were lifted manually to the upper storeys before shipment. In 1945 it became a Catholic refuge and since 1988 has been an office complex.

Businessman and father of Harold Hinks, who died after being electrocuted in the garden of Cyril and Violet McKenzie in Greenwich. Flying home from Kalgoorlie for the boy's funeral in the 'Miss Southern Cross', he was killed when the plane crashed near Yerranderie in New South Wales.
