Officer of the Royal Navy who sailed with the First Fleet. He was later granted land at Liberty Plains and Bankstown before he returned to England.

Simes, Thomas

A utility actor, he was never a star of theatre. He became the first Australian costume designer and also worked in theatre management. A week before he died the Sydney Herald commented that 'Mr Simes has injured his health by the exertions made by him in his multifarious occupations of manager, wardrobe-keeper, etc.' That evening, a farewell benefit was hosted at the Royal Victoria Theatre in his honour, as a financial show of support for his young family.

Simmonds, Isaac

Former convict who joined Sydney's early police force shortly after his arrival in the colony in 1803. Also known as Ikey, or Hikey, Bull, probably due to his size. He had been convicted of robbery in 1799 and  He was tried for the murder of fellow officer Joseph Luker in 1803, he was found not guilty due to lack of conclusive evidence. His association with criminals and the corrupt behaviour as a police officer that became apparent during the investigation into Luker's death saw Simmonds return to life as a convict however, initially at George's Head, and then the Newcastle penal colony. He was released in 1818 and died in Sydney in 1833.

Actor, a jack of all trades who frequently moved between roles. He was the Theatre Royal's first Macbeth and created the character of O'Liffey in The Currency Lass.

Simmons, Michael (Mick)

Businessman who started business as a cigar maker and tobacconist on George and Sussex streets in the 1880s. By 1895, his shop on George and Campbell streets had become one of the largest tobacco and fancy goods businesses in the city. His business expanded to include hunting and fishing equipment, and after his death, sports equipment and apparel were added to the range.

Simonetti, Achille

Italian sculptor who arrived in Sydney in 1873 after migrating to Brisbane in 1871.  Became the most fashionable sculptor in Sydney and made busts of many of the city's notables. His work includes six allegorical figures for the niches on the Colonial Secretary's building, the statue of JH Challis in the Great Hall at the University of Sydney, and the Governor Phillip monument in the Botanic Gardens.

Skripov, Ivan Fedorovich

First Secretary of the Russian Embassy in Australia from 1959 who was discovered by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation to be engaged in espionage for the Soviet Union in 1963. Secret messages had been shared between him and another operative, who was a double agent for ASIO, at various spots around Sydney including McElhone Stairs, a water meter under the Sydney Harbour Bridge and in a grave in one of Sydney's cemeteries. The pair also met at various locations including Taronga Zoo, a carpet shop in Manly and a restaurant in Collaroy. Skripov and his wife were ordered to leave the country within seven days.
