Immigration

Americans

Americans and Australians have been partners and allies for over two centuries now. Americans have been visitors, investors, entertainers, allies, residents and citizens with varying degrees of influence and notoriety.

Brazilians

Brazilians have arrived in Sydney in two waves -- largely unskilled migrants in the 1970s, attracted by an Australian government assistance scheme, and middle-class migrants, in the 1990s, attracted by a better quality of life. Despite this class divide, Brazilian festivals and the popularity of Brazilian arts and music bring the community together.

Cambodians

Cambodians began coming to Australian in the 1970s, after the fall of their country's genocidal Khmer Rouge regime. A large part of the existing community arrived in the 1980s as refugees or as family reunion migrants. Most Cambodian Sydneysiders live in the Fairfield area, and community life centres on the Khmer temples found there and on the commercial and cultural centre of Cabramatta.

Chileans

One of the largest immigrant groups from Latin America, the Chileans arrived in Sydney in several waves, responding to changing events in their home country. Now joined by students and travellers from Chile, the community maintains close connections with home and culture.

Chinese

Chinese settlers arrived in Sydney from 1818 and their compatriots followed, especially after gold was discovered in New South Wales. Despite harrassment from governments and intimidation from other Sydneysiders, Chinese immigrants continued to come and to stay throughout the 19th century, until the relaxation of racist laws in the mid-20th century. With renewed Chinese immigration in the 21st century, Sydney's Chinese community is rapidly changing.

Croatians

A scattering of Croatian migrants arrived in Sydney during the nineteenth century, but most Croatian Sydneysiders came here because of war and upheaval in their home country in the twentieth century. After World War II, when Yugoslavia came into being, many leftist Croatians went home, leaving en masse in 1948-49, and being replaced by another wave of immigrants, fleeing Communism and poverty. These Croatians have preserved their culture and identity in their new city.

Dutch

From Cornelius Du Heg, a sailor in the First Fleet ship Friendship, to the wave of post-World War II immigrants from the Netherlands, Dutch Sydneysiders have brought their culture, skills and industry to the city.

East Timorese

After the Indonesian invasion of East Timor in 1975, many East Timorese fled to Australia, and a majority settled in Sydney. Further waves of East Timorese came after the 1991 Dili massacre, and during the conflict after the 1999 referendum on independence. A majority of the community is of Chinese descent, with 40 per cent identifying as Timorese. The community has maintained diverse religious and cultural practices as well as the languages of Tetum, Hakka and Portuguese.

Egyptians

Sydney's Egyptians came in two waves, with Jews, Coptic Christians, Greek and Armenian Egyptians making up the bulk of the arrivals before 1976, and some Egyptian Muslims arriving in recent years. The Coptic Church is vital to the community, with 10 churches and a theological college. Christian and Muslim Egyptian communities in Sydney share a common heritage and identification with Egypt, and relations between them have been mainly tolerant and peaceful.

English

Sydney has been seen as an 'English' town since first European settlement, with visitors describing its English character well into the nineteenth century. Successive waves of English-born convicts, settlers, and assisted immigrants helped shape the city, and the English remain the largest overseas-born group.

French

A small but influential community, French Sydneysiders have been settlers, businesspeople, artists, performers and entrepreneurs. The visibility of Sydney's French community and its cultural organisations, schools and language has led to difficulties when French governments have taken unpopular action, such as nuclear testing in the Pacific, but reconciliations have usually been quick.

German vinedressers in Camden

Brought to Australia by the Macarthur family, to tend the vineyards on their Camden estate, the German immigrants of 1838 were the first foreign immigrants admitted under the 'bounty' scheme. Their families prospered and spread from Camden around New South Wales.

Germans

German migration has played a part in every decade of Sydney's growth and contributed widely to the rural, industrial and cultural development of the city.

Greeks

Sydney's Hellenic community is one of the city's largest and most influential, with a long and complex history. Greek-speaking people came from many parts of the Mediterranean, as well as Hellas itself, and have maintained their diverse cultural traditions at the same time as becoming part of Sydney's institutions and cultural and business life.

Immigration

From its foundation by the First Fleet, Sydney has been populated by immigrants from cultures across the world and remains Australia's most multicultural city.

Indonesians

Indonesians arrived in Sydney in great numbers after the dismantling of the White Australia policy in the 1970s, and with strong community organisations have added richly to Sydney's cultural and culinary life.

Irish Famine Memorial, Hyde Park Barracks

Eleven shiploads of Irish girls, orphaned by the Great Famine of the 1840s, arrived in Sydney between 1848 and 1850. They were housed in the Hyde Park Barracks before going out to work and marry in Sydney and beyond. In the 1990s, a worldwide movement among the Irish diaspora to commemorate the Famine, led to the construction of Sydney's Famine memorial, set into the Hyde Park Barracks perimeter wall.

Irish in Sydney from First Fleet to Federation

A large part of Sydney's European community from its earliest days, the Irish helped shape the colony and its cultural and religious institutions. While many Irish immigrants, both convict and free, prospered and flourished in Sydney throughout the nineteenth century, they rarely forgot their homeland and its struggles, and remained a community which never thought of England as 'home'.

Italians

There were Italians in Sydney before the proclamation of Italy in 1861 and stonemasons, fishermen, market gardeners and manufacturers have left their mark on the city. Expanded Italian immigration after World War II brought a strong sense of community and culture that has enriched and enlivened Sydney's cuisine and city life.

Koreans

Sydney's Korean community is an aggregate of distinct groups, who have come to Sydney at different times, and for different reasons. While they are predominantly Christian, they assert a strong Korean ethnic and cultural identity, and maintain close ties with their homeland. As the number of Sydney-born Korean-Australians increases, the community's geographic and cultural centres in Sydney are beginning to change.

Lao

A small, close-knit community, Sydney's Lao started to arrive after the Communist takeover of Laos in 1975, and have since that time rebuilt their lives and organisations in a new city.

Latvians

Sydney's Latvians arrived in two major flows, fleeing the aftermath of the 1905 revolution in Tsarist Russia, and later as part of the postwar immigration that changed Sydney in the 1950s. While the first group were largely leftist and later pro-Soviet, the later arrivals were anti-Soviet and fiercely defended and maintained their culture and language. Since Latvia's independence in 1991, ties with the home country have strengthened.

Lebanese

Once called Syrians, and considered Asian, early Lebanese Sydneysiders succeeded in business, politics and the professions, from humble beginnings in Redfern. Chain migration has kept village communities together and newer immigrants have created a diverse range of religious and social organisations.

Malaysians

From transported convicts to pearl fishermen and food hawkers, Malaysians have long had ties with Sydney. Today they form a prominent part of the daily fabric in the cultural and business life of the city.

Maltese

From the first Maltese who arrived as convicts, the Maltese community in Sydney has been distinctive and successful. Lage numbers of Maltese immigrants arrived in the postwar period, and have settled all over Sydney, particularly in the western suburbs. Strong religious organisations and a love of football bring Maltese Sydneysiders together.

Matraville

Marshes, swamps and sandhills in the area that became Matraville were turned into market gardens by the 1840s, and attracted Chinese gardeners in the 1860s. After World War I a model garden village was planned, for disabled servicemen, and built by 1921. It was never a success and only one of the homes remains.

Muslims in Sydney

Muslims have been a presence in Sydney since the eighteenth century, despite the immigration restrictions of the White Australia Policy. Half of all Australia's Muslims now live in Sydney, forming a culturally and ethnically diverse community that flourishes, even amidst outbursts of prejudice from other residents of multicultural Sydney.

Māori

Many Sydneysiders think that Māori contact with and migration to Sydney is a recent phenomenon, but in fact Māori people have been in Sydney from the earliest days of the colony, and have contributed to the city's growth and diversity and enriched its cultural and economic life.

New Zealanders

Trans-Tasman relationships predate European settlement in New Zealand, and frequent exchanges between Sydney and New Zealand have persisted over two centuries. New Zealand-born Sydneysiders have figured in every area of Sydney's history, and since the 1960s mass migration from New Zealand has brought large numbers of Kiwis into Sydney's workforce and community.

Russians

Russians have a long and complex history in Sydney, with great diversity in ethnicity, religion and history within the community, and enormous influence from developments in politics in the wider world.

Scots

Scots have been in Sydney from earliest European contact, with Forby Sutherland, a young Scottish crew member on the Endeavour, buried at Sutherland in 1770. Scots have played important roles in all facets of Sydney's history. While the Scots can seem to be 'invisible immigrants', without a clearly distinctive culture, Scottish professions, industry, religion and education have been influential in Sydney's development since the arrival of the First Fleet.

Tibetans

From the first recorded arrival of a Tibetan in Australia in 1973, the Tibetan community has grown in size and organisation. Many Sydney Tibetans are refugees and exiles. Tibetan political, cultural and religious organisations work for freedom in their homeland, cultural survival and language education in Australia and Buddhist worship.

Miss Elizabeth Killinger was born in 1899 and was interviewed in 1986 for the 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900 to 1960.' Her family was of German extraction and she talks here about anti-German sentiment during World War I.

Mrs May Rae was interviewed in 1986 for the 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900 to 1960.' She recalls her family's immigration to Liverpool in New South Wales was due to her father's skilled work in woollen mills.

Vietnamese

One of the largest and most visible migrant communities in Sydney, the Vietnamese were the first large group of Asian immigrants to settle in Sydney after the White Australia policy. Despite initial racism from Anglo-Australians, and the difficulties of a transplanted and initially a refugee group, the community has built thriving commercial and cultural centres in Sydney's south-west.

Villawood detention centre

Built on a munitions factory site, the Villawood detention centre started out as a migrant hostel, welcoming postwar immigrants to Sydney.

Abyssinian

Ship of 1072 tons which bought government emigrants to Port Jackson in 1859. Of the 404 migrants aboard, 163 were single men and 126 single women.

Ship that arrived in 1916 with 208 British subjects from Malta who were refused entry after being subjected to a dictation test in Dutch. After deportation and intervention from Governor Strickland, they were allowed to return to Sydney.

Immigration Restriction Act 1901

Federal legislation which formed the basis of the White Australia policy. It introduced a dictation test which could be given in any language, thereby giving immigration officers wide discretion in preventing entry. The dictation test was abolished in 1958 and the White Australia policy in March 1966 when it was announced that restriction on immigration by non-Europeans would be eased.

Barque of 565 tons which arrived in 1849 with six married couples and 173 single women.

Stirling Castle

Timber huts on Bent Street opposite Phillip Street that housed government sponsored migrants on their arrival in Sydney between 1837 and the mid 1840s. Tents were also pitched to accommodate when large numbers of people arrived in ships. The Government Printing Office was also located in the same complex from January 1841.

Female Immigrants' Home

Organisation founded by Caroline Chisholm in 1841 to provide accommodation and support for the large numbers of single women migrating to New South Wales. The Home occupied a portion in the south west of the Immigrants Barracks on Bent Street opposite the corner of Phillip Street. It opened in November 1841 and closed on 5 May 1842 after providing for thousands of women.

Female Immigration Depot

Primary reception and hiring depot for unprotected females either married or single, established by the colonial government. Housed in Hyde Park Barracks from 1848, thousands of impoverished women and children were assigned to new lives in the colony.

Female Middle Class Emigration Society

Society formed to provide interest-free loans to enable educated women to emigrate.

Orphan Immigration Committee

Committee established to deal with the shipping of Irish orphans to the colony in the wake of the Irish famine. The girls were to encounter hostility for their youth, incompetence and most of all their Irishness.

Czech journalist and communist who came to Australia in November 1934 as an anti-war and anti-fascism campaigner and spoke to large crowds at the Domain. Charged with being a 'prohibited immigrant', he was made to undertake the infamous 'dictation' test under the Immigration Restriction Act in Scottish Gaelic, which was not among the many languages he spoke, and he failed. His experiences here and eventual deportation in March 1935 lead to challenges to the Act.

Miss Elizabeth Killinger talks about anti-German sentiment during World War I, recorded 1986

Miss Elizabeth Killinger was born in 1899 and was interviewed in 1986 for the 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900 to 1960.' Her family was of German extraction and she talks here about anti-German sentiment during World War I.

Transcript

INTERVIEWER: Was there any anti-German sentiment felt against your family?
ELIZABETH: Not terribly much but my eldest brother, at Liverpool primary school, Mr Paradise was the headmaster there at the time and he used to call him [her brother] 'Kaiser Bill'. He says 'Kaiser Bill, come here, do this and do that!' And of course Bill was terribly upset and he came home and he told Mum. He said 'I don't like it', he said 'he calls me Kaiser Bill in front of all the, and makes fun of me'. And so Mother said 'We'll soon put a stop to that' and she went up and saw him.
INTERVIEWER: And did it stop then?
ELIZABETH: It stopped then. She said, 'child can't help his parents' nationality,' and she said 'actually I know he's well-behaved at school'. It wasn't that he was a bad lad or anything, but it stopped.
INTERVIEWER: Were your parents naturalised or not?
ELIZABETH: Yes, well my mother didn't have to be because she was English born, but Father was naturalised. I don't remember when but he must have been naturalised quite early because he wouldn't let us speak German; absolutely forbad[e] us to speak German. He wouldn't teach us German.
INTERVIEWER: Even when you were young children?
ELIZABETH: Even when we were young children we weren't allowed. He said, 'You are not to speak German!' 'Because,' he said, 'you're English, in an English land. I want you to speak good English,' and he said, 'So many of my friends, people that I know, they speak the German,' (or whatever) and he said, 'they can't speak English properly,' and he said, 'They're neither one thing or another.'

Mrs May Rae was interviewed in 1986 for the 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900 to 1960.' She recalls her family's immigration to Liverpool in New South Wales was due to her father's skilled work in woollen mills.
Transcript

INTERVIEWER: Mrs Rae, I was wondering if you could tell me when you first came to Liverpool?

MAY: The year I think would be about 1911, and we arrived in December. We left England on the 1st of November and I was four and a half that day - and my father was brought out here to help with all the spinning mules [complex machine for spinning wool or other fibres] in the Challenge Woollen Mills.

INTERVIEWER: And where did you live when you first came here?

MAY: Well, we got a house on Campbelltown Road, which is up above Atkinson St, now I think Kentucky [Fried] Chicken are up there now, and we were there for twelve months, and then we got a new home built at the end of Nagle Street, just where Atkinson Street joins Nagle Street, and then my father was given a house on the woollen mill property and he lived there until just before he retired.

INTERVIEWER: So your father worked at the woollen mills?

MAY: Well yes, because he came out to install it [the machinery]. See not many people knew how to work woollen mills and he'd always been in that field in England, and that's why he came out here.

My uncle, his name was Nathaniel Hutchinson, he was the one that sent for my father to come out because he was in the same work.
