Aboriginal Health College, Little Bay

Designed for and by Aboriginal people, the Aboriginal Health College at Little Bay is connected to both culture and environment.

Alpen, Hugo

Alpen influenced the musical culture of Sydney through his composition, teaching and conducting. As Superintendent of Music for New South Wales public schools, he emphasised singing and listening as part of music training for all students.

Anderson, Maybanke

A founder of Sydney's women's suffrage movement, Maybanke Anderson was also a writer and teacher, and a lifelong campaigner for the rights of women and children.

Armstrong, John

Teacher, businessman, farmer and diarist, John Armstrong was active in debates and organisations in Sydney's mid-nineteenth century public sphere.

Berne, Dagmar

Dagmar Berne was the first female student of medicine at Sydney University and a pioneering doctor. Confronted by prejudice, she was obliged to travel overseas to qualify. She gained world-class degrees and was feted on her return to Sydney, yet was denied access to employment in general hospitals. She established a private practice, lectured, and worked with women's organisations to progress women's health in Sydney, before tuberculosis forced her to move to Springwood, and then Trundle, where she died suddenly in 1900

Biffin, Harriett Eliza

Harriett Biffin was a pioneer Sydney woman doctor. One of the second group of women to graduate in medicine at the University of Sydney in 1898, she was the first to establish a women’s joint medical practice in Sydney and a suburban general medical practice, and founded both The Medical Women’s Society of New South Wales and the Rachel Forster Hospital with Dr Lucy Edith Gullett.

Carmichael, Henry

Reverend, educationist, winemaker and activist, Henry Carmichael influenced education and public life in the colony for 30 years.

Dr Iza Coghlan

Iza Coghlan was one of the first two women in New South Wales to graduate in medicine at the University of Sydney in 1893. The second Australian woman doctor to register with the New South Wales Medical Board, she pioneered private medical practice in Sydney and was the first Sydney woman doctor to operate two long-standing concurrent practices. Dr Coghlan formed the first women’s life-saving class in New South Wales, and established the New South Wales Medical Women’s Association, serving as its first president. She dedicated her later career to the health and welfare of school children across New South Wales, serving as government medical officer to the Department of Public Instruction.

Education

Education in Sydney started with Aboriginal society and the everyday learning and formal initiation of young Aboriginal people. Institutionalised education came with the Europeans, who first created schools for convicts' children, and later for the children of the new gentry and middle classes. Sydney became the centre of education in the colony, with a university, and eventually in 1880, universal education throughout the suburbs of the growing city.

Governesses

Working as a governess was one of the few respectable occupations for middle-class women in the nineteenth century, but governesses were placed in a difficult social position, living with the families they worked for, but not being regarded as on the same level. The women who came to Sydney as governesses were the main providers of education for girls, and their roles and attainments changed as attitudes to women's education altered over the century.

Minto school and Communist party camp

Built on Dharug country, the Minto Communist party camp functioned as a training school and recreational camp for nearly 50 years before passing to Tranby Aboriginal Cooperative College with the dispersal of Communist party assets in the 1990s.

Moore College

Endowed with the estate of Thomas Moore, who died in 1840, the college began operation in 1856, in Moore's house at Liverpool. By the end of the nineteenth century it had moved to Newtown, near the University of Sydney, and had trained 199 ministers.

Parramatta and Black Town Native Institutions

The Parramatta and Black Town Native Institutions existed from 1814 till 1829 as part of a campaign initially led by Governor Lachlan Macquarie and designed to inculcate European ideas of 'civilisation', commerce and Christianity into Aboriginal people and turn them into industrious workers.

Royal Prince Alfred Hospital

Proposed in 1868 after the assassination attempt on Prince Alfred, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital was opened in 1882 and grew steadily. Closely linked with Sydney University, the hospital trained many doctors and nurses.

Sydney Day Nursery Association

The Sydney Day Nursery Association was established in Woolloomooloo in 1905 as a child care service for infant children of working class mothers. It extended its services to preschool-aged children in 1937, when it changed its name to the Sydney Day Nursery and Nursery Schools Association. In 1999 it became SDN Children's Services.

Wallace, William

Hailed as the 'Australian Paganini', William Wallace was a musical star in Sydney on his arrival in 1836, but left only two years later, in debt, for adventures elsewhere.

The full title was 'The elementary free-hand drawing book on the plan used in the public schools of Great Britain, under the authority of the Department of Science and Art, in the public schools of New South Wales, by authority of the Council of Education, and in the public schools of Queensland. with full instructions by J. Fowles'.

Department of Education building

Imposing Edwardian sandstone building at 35-39 Bridge Street in the city that operated as the headquarters of the New South Wales Department of Education from 1915 until 2016. Constructed on the site of an earlier sandstone cottage that had been in use by the department since the early 1880s. The building was constructed in two sections with several later additions. The southern section was occupied the Department of Agriculture until 1967. In 2016 the Department of Education office in the building was closed and staff were relocated.

Nithsdale House

Two storey building opposite Hyde Park at 167 Liverpool Street and the corner of Nithdale Street. Built in 1873 as the home and a dance academy and ballroom of owner Frank Hillard Needs on the site of Figtree Cottage. Medical professionals also took rooms there in the 1890s. In 1903 it was purchased from the Needs family by the Sydney City Mission, who used the assembly rooms as their headquarters and continued to lease out other rooms. It was purchased from the Mission in 1913 by the developer of a picture theatre and sold again in 1922 before being demolished.

Oldest Catholic church in Australia in continuous use, the building was constructed on the site of a quarry and used as a school since 1835. The second storey was added in 1935 to allow the lower storey to be used as a church.

St Josephs church hall, Rozelle

Former school and parish hall that is part of the St Joseph's Catholic church on Victoria Road, Rozelle. The original single storey hall was erected in 1905, and an additional storey and other facilities were added in 1915 by the builder Mr P Raines of Drummoyne to plans by architects Buchanan and McKay.

Trinity Hall, Argyle Place

Former school building now used as a parish hall on the northern side of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church at Millers Point. It was built between 1846 and 1860 to house the school the church had established in 1844 in nearby rented premises. In the 1940s and 1950s the hall was also used as a Church of England National Emergency Fund hostel for servicemen.

Dagmar Berne Prize

University of Sydney monetary prize for students that was established in 1917 with funds presented to the university by the mother of Dagmar Berne, the first woman to study medicine there. For many years it was awarded to the woman who gained the highest marks in her final year of Medicine, and then from 2003 was awarded annually to a candidate for the degrees of the Bachelor of Medicine and the Bachelor of Surgery for proficiency in the final barrier examinations.

Coptic Theological College that is part of the St Mark Coptic Church precinct at 72 Wollongong Road, Arncliffe. Established in 1982 as the Pope Shenouda III College for Theological Studies, it was the first to be established outside of Egypt. The college was restructured and formalised as St Cyril’s Coptic Orthodox Theological College in 2015.

Blackmore, Edward Hugh Enes

Classics and mathematics teacher who ran his own school on Hunter Street. He also taught at Sydney Grammar in the late 1850s and 1860s, as well as working as a private tutor, and teaching for a short time in the 1880s at Sydney Girls High. Born in England, he had migrated to New Zealand in the 1840s, where he was secretary to Governor George Grey, then the Collector of Customs and Sub Treasurer in Nelson. When it was discovered he had been misappropriating funds from the Treasury, he left the colony and arrived in Sydney in about 1856. His brother, Edwin Blackmore, was a respected legal scholar in South Australia.

After two years’ service with the New South Wales Department of Public Works, Warren initiated the teaching of engineering at the University of Sydney in March 1883. He remained Head of the Department of Engineering until his retirement at the end of 1925.

Warren’s main interest was in materials and structures. He was the author of three editions of a widely used textbook: the first Australia-based publication in this field. He also imported Australia’s first materials testing machine in 1885, the results from which on Australian materials were of national importance.

Watson, ELC

Elsie, or ELC, Watson as she appeared to prefer, was born in Elgin, Scotland in about 1870. She studied at St Andrew's University and received an L La, before coming to Australia where members of her extended family lived. She worked in Sydney at the Presbyterian Ladies College from 1890-1892, and Women's College as a mathematics tutor, from 1894-1897. She also taught at Ipswich GIrls Grammar in Queensland, and by correspondence, with an emphasis on giving women the necessary skills to attend university. In the late 1890s she left for London where she worked as a journalist, most sensationally for the Express, when, in association with reports of a missing woman in 1903, she 'hid' herself, with readers offered a prize to identify her. In 1912 Watson crossed South Africa solo on a motorcycle, the first person to do so. Watson was a socialist and a feminist, actively involved in the suffrage movement and agricultural reform. She made numerous trips to Australia to visit her sister Annie, who had also been a teacher. She was the New Zealand Press Association representative in London from about 1920 until shortly before her death in January 1945.
