Victorian architecture

Bidura

As the primary hub for child welfare in Sydney, Bidura is a place shared by members of the Stolen Generations and Forgotten Australians and is remembered by them with little fondness.

Clairvaux House

By the early twentieth century many of Sydney's old estates were subdivided. Their large grounds were too expensive to maintain and as Sydney expanded, land became a premium. Clairvaux House, a grand Victorian house, was built on land purchased from the Wentworth Estate c 1871. A domestic residence until the early twentieth century, the house underwent three subdivisions before being demolished in 1929.

Customs House

Designed and redesigned by three government architects, Customs House has presided over Circular Quay since 1845. It has always been a government building, although its functions have changed over time.

Glebe Courthouse

Glebe Courthouse was built in 1889 in recognition of a growing Sydney metropolitan area. However, its use as a courthouse was frustrated by the government's refusal to appoint additional stipendiary magistrates.

Glenrock

Glenrock, the home of the Smith and Whistler Smith families from the 1840s, was replaced by a later building that is, along with Fiona, now part of Ascham.

Lands Department Building

The Lands Department Building on Bridge Street, one of Sydney's iconic 'sandstones', was designed by Colonial Architect James Barnet and embodies the work of the surveyors of New South Wales.

Queen Victoria Building

One of Sydney City Council's big projects in the late nineteenth century, ostensibly built to replace the old central markets, the Queen Victoria Building was never really intended to be used as markets, and contained 200 shops under one roof. Later used as council offices and a library, the building was restored to retail use in the 1980s.

Strand Arcade

Opened in 1892, the Strand Arcade was one of five built in the city centre during the late nineteenth century. It was designed as a covered shopping street, with 80 shopfronts on four floors. By the 1950s it was neglected but in the 1970s the arcade was refurbished, and has since been restored after fire damage.

Royal Australian Historical Society Green Plaque 3. The Lands Department

Commemorative plaque that was installed on the Lands Department building by the Royal Australian Historical Society in 1985 as part of the Sydney Green Plaques Bicentennial project. The text read 'This office was designed by James Barnet, Colonial Architect, and erected in two stages in 1876 and 1888 on the site earlier occupied by the Judge-Advocate's residence and the Surveyor General's office'.

Abbotsford House

Two-storey Victorian mansion of stuccoed and painted stone with two-storey verandahs on the front and most of the two sides. It retains excellent interior plaster decorations and ceilings and cedar detailing. It became offices for Nestles between 1917 and 1991 before being refurbished as a family home.

Admiralty House

Large stone mansion with slate hipped-gable roof of two storeys with two storey verandah. It became home to a succession of prominent Colonial administrators and businessmen, then became an Official Residence for the Royal Naval Commanders then Australian Governors General.

Albion House

Mansion with twelve foot wide verandahs on the corner of Albion and Mary streets which formed the centrepiece of the Albion Estate. The estate was subdivided in 1873.

Annandale Abbey

Sandstone mansion built as a gentleman's residence with gables and tower and reconfigured into flats for working-class families in the 1920s. The 50-room house was bought by Dr Geoffrey Davis in 1959 who held it for 50 years before it was purchased and totally restored by Michael Hogan and Ann Sherry as a family home.

Ascot Randwick

Two-storey late Victorian mansion in Randwick which was built by Philip Nicolle who lived there with his family. The house was then occupied by William Thow and then Archibald Shaw. Shaw experimented with wireless transmissions and built a large factory at the rear of the mansion, which has since been demolished. 'Archina' on Avoca Street also formed part of the site and in 1917 it was acquired by the Commonwealth Government for use by the Royal Australian Navy. From 1924, the Royal Australian Air Force set up an experimental station on the land. Ascot was used as a design office and residence for Lawrence Wackett and Archina housed the engineers. In 1932, it was converted to accommodation for Army officers and their families.

Avonmore Terrace Randwick

Group of nine, three storey, Victorian Italianate terrace houses on a site originally part of an 1864 land grant to the Church of England. In 1905 the properties were sold to the estate of Bernhardt Otto Holtermann and between 1903-8 Lotaville Private School was conducted at No 34 Avonmore which is now a boutique hotel.

Balmain Post Office

Purpose built with courthouse and police station adjacent, which has served the community since 1887. It comprises a grand two storey building with prominent clocktower setback from Darling Street.

Bellevue

Colonial mansion on Glebe Point of late Victorian Italianate design. It was only used as a home until 1925 when a timber mill was operated from and around the site. When Blackwattle Bay Park was created by landfill in the 1970s only the house was retained due to community lobbying and currently operates as a cafe and community centre.

Benledi

Grand Victorian mansion on the corner of Glebe Point and Wigram Roads in Glebe, built for timber merchant Alexander Kethel. It was later converted to a homeopathic hospital and general community hospital. It is now owned by the City of Sydney and houses the Glebe branch of the public library and other community groups. The adjacent park was the site of the Sydney Hospital for Sick Children, founded in 1880. This was renamed the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children in 1904 and moved to Camperdown in 1907. The hospital building was also used by the homeopathic hospital before it was razed for the park in 1968.

Bidura

Two storey Victorian house with a former ballroom and large formal garden which was once one among many grand estates along Glebe Point road. From the 1920s the house was used as a girls' home and children's court whilst a remand centre was constructed at the rear in 1980 to facilitate the operation of Bidura Children's Court. It was sold for residential development in 2014.

Cemetery Station No. 1 Rookwood

A railway station terminus at Rookwood Cemetery, also known as the Necropolis Receiving Station, which served the cemetery's railway line. It was part of a larger line completed in 1869 that ran to the Woronora General Cemetery in Sutherland and to Sandgate Cemetery in Newcastle. James Barnet adopted elements of 13th-century Venetian Gothic style and the station included wide platforms, a ticket office, two vestibules, retiring rooms and a carriage port. After the station closed, it was dismantled and moved to Canberra where it is now All Saints Church.

Residence built by Joseph Hyde Potts in Potts Point. During James Martin's ownership, its surrounding garden was famed as one of the 'most architecturally elaborate gardens constructed in Australia'. The gardens were developed in 1853-68 and the novelist Anthony Trollope described the 'garden falling down to the sea' as a 'fairyland'. Its monument of Lysicrates was later moved to the Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney. The property was acquired by the Royal Australian Navy in 1941 and then subsequently destroyed, however, elements of the original garden have survived. The navy base HMAS Kuttabul now stands on the site, located adjacent to the Garden Island dockyard.

Claverton Randwick

Grand Victorian residence, part of two attached houses, built in the 1890s which form part of the elegant streetscape in St Mark's Road.

Como Hotel

Hotel which served visitors to the Como boating and pleasure grounds from the late nineteenth century until it was burnt down in 1996. Rebuilt in 2001 to the same design, it is still in use, although the bay in front of it was reclaimed during the Depression.

Crows Nest House

House built by Alexander Berry in the 1840s on his Crows Nest Estate. From the 1890s the surrounding land was subdivided and sold and the house was demolished in 1933. Its site is now occupied by North Sydney Demonstration School.

Customs House

Public building on Alfred Street at Circular Quay where shipping was cleared and goods passing through the port of Sydney were taxed and cleared for sale or export. A number of Customs House buildings have stood on the site since since 1845 and it was designed and redesigned by three government architects Mortimer Lewis, James Barnet and Walter Liberty Vernon. When the port was busy the House was crowded and noisy, the scene of raised tempers, delays and disputed dealings. It was surrounded by public houses, shipping companies and general maritime activities.

In 1990 the building was closed as a customs departments and in 1994 was leased to the City of Sydney who refurbished the building for use as a multipurpose commercial space that opened in 1995. In 2005 Customs House reopened as the headquarters of the City of Sydney Library and function centre. In April 2019 the City of Sydney purchased the building from the Federal Government.

General Post Office

Renaissance Palazzo style building in Pyrmont sandstone on the corner of George Street and Martin Place. The building was constructed on the site of the earlier George Street General Post Office in two stages from 1866 to 1892 as the headquarters of the Government's growing postal services. In the mid 1990s part of the building was sold and converted for use as a hotel, with the remainder of the building being sold to the hotel's operators Far East/Sino Land in 2017.

Genesian Theatre

Small rectangular church in Kent Street designed in a simplified Victorian Free Gothic style. It has served as church, school, hostel and theatre and houses three rare, early Australian stained glass windows by John Falconer dating from 1868. The building was sold by the Catholic Archdiocese in 2019 as part of the redevelopment of the site.

Council chambers and hall in the Victorian Classical style completed in 1880 on the corner of St. Johns' Road, Mt. Vernon and Lodge Streets Glebe. It was designed by Ambrose Thornley Jnr and built by Sanbrook and Sons. Today the building is used as a Council Neighbourhood Service Centre.

Row of five elegant townhouses built in Liverpool Street opposite Hyde Park for emancipist Samuel Lyons in 1841. The initial designs in 1837 by John Verge were completed by John Bibb. The houses were gradually demolished in the early 20th century, the first in 1910 and the last in 1925.

Large Italianate warehouse on the corner of Alfred and Young Streets at Circular Quay that was designed by Edmund Blacket in the 1860s for Mort & Co. The building was extended in the 1880s, and demolished in 1959 (by which time it was known as the Farmers and Graziers Building) to make way for the construction of the AMP Building.

Mortuary railway station

Gothic style railway station on Regent Street in Chippendale that was built on a spur line as a terminus for funeral trains to Rookwood cemetery. Designed by James Barnet and built in two colours of Pyrmont sandstone, the receiving station at the other end of the line was in a similar style. The first time the station was used was for the funeral of Dr William Bland on 23 July 1868. In 1938 funeral trains stopped running from Mortuary station and the name was changed to Regent Street Station. The station, with some stationary rail cars, was restored and used as a restaurant in the 1980s. It is occasionally opened for heritage events.

Paddington Town Hall

Town hall in Victorian Free Classical style which replaced the first Council venue built near the site of the Royal Women's Hospital in Oxford Street in 1866. As the suburb grew and became more prosperous in the 1880s the present site was purchased and the imposing civic centre constructed.In 1905 the 32 meter clock tower was added.

Pitt Street Temperance Hall

Hall constructed by the New South Wales Alliance for the Suppression of Intemperance which by 1884 had had 37000 people sign the pledge. The growth of the Alliance necessitated the enlargement of the hall by builder Charles Gerth in 1884.

Grand domed sandstone arcade in the centre of the city which was saved from demolition in the 1980s and restored to its Federation Romanesque glory. Previously the site had been the municipal markets designated by Governor Macquarie and its current retail tenants continue the tradition.

Two storey Victorian Regency style building which was an important symbol of the growth of the area between the 1840s and 1890s and which has remained a focus point for the community despite the municipality being subsumed by larger councils.

Strand Arcade

The last surviving Victorian shopping arcade in Sydney. Three storeys high with glass roof, cantilevered galleries, cast iron balustrades, and timber framed shopfronts, it has been restored after several fires and still retains the small elite boutiques that defined the Sydney shopping experience of the 1890s.

Strickland House

Early Victorian Italianate mansion originally called Carrara at 52 Vaucluse Rd, Vaucluse. It was designed by John Hilly and built for John Hosking in 1855. It has also been used as a school, convalescent hospital and aged care facility.

Built on the site of Sydney's first official European cemetery, the Town Hall was designed by architect JH Willson in High Victorian style and constructed of Pyrmont sandstone. The highly ornate interiors have seen pomp and ceremony, protests and performance, and the building remains a significant focus for the city.

Tattersall's Building, Hunter and Castlereagh Streets

Four storey office block, assembly room and stables building on the corner of Hunter and Castlereagh Street which was designed by architects Benjamin Backhouse & John J Lough in 1882 and completed by builder WH Jennings in 1883 for Hawkes. Stalls for up to 156 horseswere situated even up to the third floor, with a series of ramps and elevator providing access. The site had previously been in use by circuses and for athletics. Also known as the Tattersalls Chambers, and subsequently the Royal Chambers, the building was demolished in the early 1960s and replaced by the P&O-Orient Line building at 1 Castlereagh Street.

The Warren

Victorian Gothic mansion with over 30 rooms on the banks of the Cooks River at Marrickville. Filled with art and sculptures the house was built of sandstone quarried on the property.

Heritage-listed two-storey Victorian sandstone house built for George Kiss and was most probably named after the town of Ventnor in the Isle of Wight, England. The family resided there until 1963 when it was sold to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church.

Chapel built in 1840 to a design by Josiah Atwool. Like chapels all over the world, it celebrated the centenary of the conversion of John and Charles Wesley in 1739.

Lavish Victorian bar built in George Adams' Tattersall's Hotel when it was renovated in 1891. The bar was dismantled and reassembled when the hotel was demolished in the late 1960s and reassembled in 1973 in the new Hilton Hotel that was built in its place. Ornately designed to Adams' specifications by Henry Parkes' son, architect Varney Parkes, the bar features sheets of plate glass mirrors, marble walls and pilasters, mosaic floors, cedar timbers, stained glass windows and domed roof, and a series of paintings by Julian Ashton.
